Health Parlours Spinning Dollars

The following are some of the rejuvenation programmes (Rejuvenation is only a part of Ayurveda) available in health parlours in Kerala and now in some other places:

1. Pizhichil: Applying medicated oils over the body for a long duration.

2. Nasyam: Oils, powders, juices etc are sent through the nostrils.

3. Njavara Kizhi: Certain materials in muslin bags are applied warm over the body to create sweating.

4. Dhara: Oils and milk are poured over the head for a long duration continuously.
5. Vasthi: Herbal medicines are applied through the rectum: for bowel evacuation
6. Snehapanam: Internal administration of medicated ghee.
7. Kizhi: Herbal products are applied to the affected part in cloth bags with hot medicated oils.
8 Thalam: Placing medicated oils etc on the top of the head and keeping it there for half an hour or so.
9. Lepanam: Application of medicated oils or paste etc on the affected part.
10. Yoni Prakshalanam: Herbal oils etc are applied through the vagina: for gynaecological disorders; said to purify the female genitals.
11. Uzhichil: A type of massage to relieve pain.

The rejuvenation methods are resorted to in the management of health problems like paralysis, arthritis, neurological disorders, sexual weakness, headaches, insomnia, migraine, joint pains, chronic constipation, spondilitis, injuries, psychiatric ailments, gynaecological disorders and so on.

The listed programmes are methods of rejuvenation. Medicine varies according to the disease.

There is a mushroom growth of Ayurvedic rejuvenation centres in Kerala etc, especially in Kovalam, patronised by the State Government. Some are run by the Government itself and others by private parties. The crazy business in Ayurveda has invited the ire of the traditional medical profession in the State. They fear that this will do immense harm to the profession in the long run. Highly priced, these programmes have foreign tourists as their target.
