'Janasheen' and 'Kal Ho Na Ho': Two big-budget Hindi films

Two much awaited big-budget Hindi multi-starrers were released at theatres across the country on Friday: 'Janasheen' and 'Kal Ho Na Ho'. Flamboyant director Feroze Khan's magnum opus 'Janasheen' starring his son and the stylish actor Fardeen Khan, along with former Miss India Celina Jaitley, drew a large crowd on the first day. Critics have given thumbs down to the film in which the main protagonist, a visually impaired violinist played by Jaitley, is shown in bikinis. Khan's earlier ventures "Prem Agan" and "Yalgaar" did not go down well with the audience but the soulful melodies with equally good lyrics have always been a crowd puller.

Movie-goers in the Capital who went for the first show of the film had mixed reactions for the film. "This film is very different from the earlier films of Fardeen Khan. It's better. This film is different," said Amit Singh, a cine-goer. For a few, the film didn't match up to their expectations. "This is a big bore, people walked out in the middle of the film, it is a waste of money," said Rahul, another cine-goer.

Another film-maker, known for his opulent sets and larger-than- life characters and story, released his latest film starring the top actors of the Indian film industry. Whizkid Karan Johar's "Kal Ho Na Ho" (Who knows about tomorrow) featuring Advani (25), who assisted Johar in his earlier blockbuster films "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" (Something happens in heart) and "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" (Sometimes happiness, sometimes sadness), is a graduate in film-making from the United States.

"Kal Ho Na Ho" is a story of relationships, - between friends, lovers and parents. The film is reportedly based on Indian veteran director Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 1973 classic "Anand" (Happiness), the story of a strong friendship between a doctor and his terminally ll patient. Though the film opened to full houses, there were many who said they did not like it.

"It was ok. It was not so good. Not so emotional and stuff, pretty lengthy and the songs were also not upto the mark," said Pankaj Kapoor, a movie buff. But quite a few had come to see their favourite superstar Shah Rukh Khan. "The movie was really good, really great. I really enjoyed it. Shah Rukh Khan was good, as always, so was Preity Zinta. The story was really good," said Swaraj Sharma.

Johar has reportedly signed Saif Ali Khan and heartthrob Vivek Oberoi for his next movie. According to trade analysts, as the Christmas season approaches, a slew of movies are ready for release at the box office- including Khalid Mohammad's "Tehzeeb" (Culture), Ram Gopal Verma's "Ek Hasina Thi" (Once there was a beautiful girl), and Amitabh Bachchan starrer "Aetbaar" (Trust).
