Homage to Jawaharlal Nehru

A decorated portrait of Nehru on his birth anniversary

  New Delhi: Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today (Nov 14) paid homage to the country's firstprimeminister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 115th birth anniversary. Along with Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the PM paid tributes at Pandit Nehru's samadhi at Shanti Van. A host of leaders were also present on the occasion. Nehru's birthday is celebrated as Children's Day across the country. Affectionately remembered as "Chacha Nehru", Jawaharlal was known to be very fond of children. Born in 1889, he joined freedom movement against the British rule at a very early age. A close associate of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, he was imprisoned several times for political activity. Nehru was India's longest prime minister holding office from 1947 to 1964 when he died.
