Sangeet Natak Akademi awards presented

        New Delhi: Outstanding artists in the fields of music, dance, threatre, folk arts and puppetry have been presented the Sangeet Natak Akademi national awards for the year 2003. The awards were given away by President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam at a function in the Capital recently.

      The awards are recognized as the highest national honour conferred on practising artistes, gurus and scholars. Past recipients include eminent personalities such as Alauddin Khan, Hafiz Ali Khan, Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, Omkar Nath Thakur, T Balasaraswati, Rukmini Devi Arundale, Kelucharan Mohapatra, Sachin Deb Burman, Satyajit Ray, Sombhu Mitra, PL Deshpande, CC Mehta, Mohan Rakesh, B V Karanth. The award carries a purse money of Rs 50,000 in cash, a tamrapatra and a shawl.

      The Sangeet Natak Akademi was established by the Government on May 31,1952 as the National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama. It was created as the apex body in the country for promoting performing arts.
