Krishan Kant Is Dead
NEW DELHI: Vice-President Krishan Kant died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here on Saturday (July 27) morning after a massive heart attack. He was 75.
He was taken to the hospital immediately after he complained of chest pain, but the the end came within an hour.He is survived by wife Suman, two sons and a daughter. He was declared dead at 8.45 a.m. Kant, hailing from Amritsar, had his education from Benares Hindu University. He became a Congress leader during Indira Ganndhi's time. However, during the Emergency he was with socialist leader Jayaprakash Narayan in his democracy movement against the Emergency declared by Indira Gandhi, and was jailed. The government has announced a three-day state mourning. His body will be cremated on Sunday (July 28). India
Overseas Powell Arrives in Delhi for Crucial Talks(Go To Top) NEW DELHI: US Secretary of State Colin Powell arrived here on Saturday (July 27) on his third visit to the subcontinent in less than a year to broker peace between India and Pakistan. He was due to meet Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha later on Saturday and Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on Sunday morning. India had said on Thursday that it was keen to discuss matters relating to Pakistan's continued support to cross-border terrorism with the US Secretary. Powell, who is on his way to an ASEAN regional security meeting in Brunei, is expected to try and nudge the two foes towards dialogue, but the mood in New Delhi remains grim. The US Secretary of State will be the latest high-profile visitor to the region since a militant attack on Parliament in December prompted the border troop buildup. British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw ended a quick trip to both Capitals last week with few apparent results. Meanwhile, while talking to reporters, Sinha said "necessary conditions" did not exist for talks with India's arch-rival Pakistan. -ANI 66
Killed in Air Show Mishap LONDON: Sixty-six people were killed and 67 injured after a Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jet crashed at an air show in western Ukraine on Saturday (July 27), an official spokesman said. "At the moment 66 people are dead and 67 are in hospital. Four of those 66 have already been taken to the morgue, the rest are being identified at the scene," he told reporters. Officials in the western city of Lviv, close to the border with Poland, said some of those in hospital were in critical condition . -ANI |
