Moon's ideal real estate site identified (Go To Top)

London: US scientists claim to have found places in the Moon's north pole ideal for a future human colony. Scientists have said that they have located a section along the rim of a 73-km-wide crater called Peary, near the Moon's north pole, that appears to be constantly illuminated and fit for a human colony, New Scientist quoted a report in the Nature as saying. They have said that though the Moon's environment is harsh with temperatures varying from -100 degrees centigrade to 100 degrees centigrade, the moon's poles however seemed less extreme. Also since the moon spins almost vertically, with respect to the plane of its orbit around the Sun, therefore the poles never experience a sunset. The Sun only skims around the horizon as the Moon rotates.

This, scientists believe will provide a stable temperature of about -50 degrees Centigrade and a steady source of energy, both considered crucial for the establishment of any future lunar base. Planetary scientists led by Ben Bussey from the Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, US have said that the sun-drenched sections on the moon's surface "are the prime candidates to be the most illuminated places on the Moon" and an "ideal site" for a future lunar base. "If it's in permanent sunlight, we've got permanent power," Clive Neal a planetary scientist at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana was quoted as saying. Scientists have however, said that the ridge around a 2500- kilometre-wide crater at the Moon's south pole does have the possibility of blocking some of the light and cast shadow over the region, adding that a crater rim or another topographical feature could cast a shadow over the region during the northern hemisphere's winter, when the Moon's southern hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun.
