Advani calls on Musharraf

    New Delhi: Leader of the Opposition LK Advani called on visiting Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf at the Hotel Taj Mansingh in the capital on Sunday. Talking to reporters just before the meeting, Musharraf reiterated his stand regarding his talks with the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying it was open and positive. "Many issues in regards to the relation between the two countries were discussed. It included the " Kashmir dispute" too. I am happy to say that we have open discussions on many issues and the environment is improving significantly," said Musharraf. The Pakistani President, during his short stay in the capital, will be meeting with the Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance Sonia Gandhi and the leaders of Hurriyat Conference.

Musharraf to meet Vajpayee on Monday (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf will call on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee tomorrow morning before leaving for Manila after ending his three-day visit to India. Sources said President Musharraf would meet the senior BJP leader at his residence, 6A, Krishna Menon Marg. The timing of his meeting is yet to be worked out, sources said. Vajpayee and Musharraf had initiated the peace process between the two countries in the first week of January 2004 on the sidelines of the 12th SAARC summit. Vajpayee is also credited with starting the Delhi-Lahore bus service in February 1999 by himself travelling d on board the inaugural bus.

      New Delhi: India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh presented a nostalgic India-born Pakistani President Musharraf with his birth certificate and a painting of his ancestral home on Sunday, hours after the leaders held landmark talks to push forward a slow peace process. During her visit to the capital last month, President Pervez Musharraf's mother Begum Zarin had expressed her desire to get the birth certificates of her three children. She had also visited the hospital where Musharraf was born. Many of India's pre-1947 government records were destroyed or lost during the mayhem that ensued after the nation was split to form Pakistan and Indian authorities had a tough time trying to locate the rare documents. After weeks of searching through dozens of bulging, archaic and dusty ledgers the New Delhi municipal officers finally found entries for two male children born on August 11, 1942 and July 22, 1945, respectively, both identified as 'son of Musharraf (Presidents father)' and another entry dated 1941 for a female child. In his last visit to India Musharraf had also visited his home where he had lived before it was sold by his grandfather in 1946.

President Kalam hosts lunch for Musharraf (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: President APJ Kalam today hosted lunch in honour of the visiting Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and his wife, Sehba Musharraf at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Among those present at the lunch were Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The lunch followed after the Pak President and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met for a two-hour long meeting. During the meeting, India and Pakistan agreed to set up a joint business council to accelerate bilateral trade and launch rail link between Munabao in Rajasthan and Khokrapar in Sindh in December this year. The two sides also decided to increase the frequency of Srinagar- Muzaffarabad bus service. The two sides also discussed the issue of reopening each other's Consulates in Mumbai and Karachi.

Former UP Governor Vishnukant Shastri dead (Go To Top)

     Kolkata: Former Uttar Pradesh Governor Vishnukant Shastri died early on Sunday morning of a heart attack while he was on his way to Patna. Shastri was 76 and is survived by his daughter. According to state BJP sources, Shastri had left for Patna by the Danapur Express last night to give a discourse on the Gita. Shastri became a member of the West Bengal assembly in 1977 and was also a member of the Rajya Sabha. He was also the all India Vice-President of the BJP before he took over as the Uttar Pradesh governor.
