34 is the ideal age for women to have kids
(Go To Top)

London: The ideal age for a woman to have her first baby is 34, according to a new research. The study involving more than 2,200 women found that waiting to start a family is not a bad idea, a conclusion that will relieve many working women who agonise about when to have a baby. "Those women, and I see a lot of them in the classroom, they are really concerned about when it is best to start a family. I hope this will be just one piece of information they can use in making decisions about their own lives," Prof John Mirowsky, lead author of the study was quoted by the Telegraph as saying. The study looked over several decades at the long-term health problems and risk of death based on when a woman's first child was born. While women in their early 20s are more fertile and "biologically fit", older mothers tend to be more mature and engage in less risky behaviour, having become more settled educationally, financially and emotionally, Prof Mirowsky said. "At any age, a woman who had her first child at 34 is likely to be, in health terms, 14 years younger than a woman who gave birth at 18," he added. The research, Age at First Birth, Health and Mortality, which appears in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, found that "women who wait" enjoy better health, live longer and end up having healthier babies.

US, UK no longer `lands of opportunity': study (Go To Top)

London: The United States and Britain are no longer seen as `lands of opportunity," a study of eight industrialised nations has revealed. According to the London School of Economics study, reported by The Independent, Britain and the United States are ranked seventh and eighth in terms of social mobility. A study was carried out on behalf of the Sutton Trust, an educational charity. It shows that Britons find it harder than other nationalities to earn more money and get better jobs than their parents. Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland were found to be the most socially mobile. They were followed by Germany, Canada, Britain and the US. The findings were based on studies of two cohorts of children born in the 1950s and 1970s. While 17 per cent of those born in the UK in 1958 made it from the bottom quarter income group to the top, only 11 per cent born in 1970 did so. Mobility in the Nordic countries was twice that of the UK. While the prospect of improving life chances was higher in the US than in Britain.
