Naxals attack Chhattisgarh police station, kill one

Bhatgaon (Chhattisgarh): Naxals in Chhattisgarh's Bhatgaon area have attacked a police station and killed one person. Bhatgaon, a nearly three-hour drive from capital Raipur, has been sleepless ever since the brazen attack with both locals and policemen, claiming that they are outnumbered by the heavily armed rebels and expressing fears of a repeat violence. "According to the information available, around 20 or more Naxals came in two vehicles. They knew before hand that there were less number of policemen in the police station. They surrounded the police station and started firing. They also fired at civilians killing one of them. They looted some guns and ammunition from the police post," S.B.Kulleri, Superintendent of Police, Balrampur district, said on Friday. The Naxalites are known to attack landlords, moneylenders and civil and police officials and also government property. Maoists have been fighting a low-intensity insurgency for more than three decades in Chhattisgarh and eight other states.

Kapil Dev's property in Delhi sealed  (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Property belonging to former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev and his wife Romi was sealed by officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Friday on the orders of the Delhi High Court. The property located in Delhi's posh Greater Kailash area was apparently being used for commercial purposes in violation of rules. The building houses a number of flats, showrooms and a boutique, owned by Kapil and Romi Dev. "They were operating shops in a residential area, which is not allowed," said R B Bansal, Executive Engineer, MCD. Kapil Dev, who was present at the time and owns part of the building, insisted that he didn't know they were violating a rule by using it commercially. He also claimed to have no idea that the building did not have a completion certificate. A mandatory clearance from the MCD is required before a flat can be occupied. Kapil Dev said that he would probably file an affidavit in the court stating that he would not use his property for commercial purposes.

Sans NDA, Parliament lacks quorum  (Go To Top)
by Pankaj Yadav

New Delhi: With the BJP-led NDA boycotting the Parliament, the Lok Sabha could not function for as many as 35 minutes today due to lack of quorum. After the lunch, the LS was scheduled to resume business at 2.00 p.m., but the bell rang up till 2.20 p.m. as not enough members were present in the House. As a result, the House was adjourned till 2.30 p.m. Second time too the bell rang for five minutes before the members of the ruling parties present who were sitting in the Central Hall made it to the LS to let it begin the post-lunch proceedings. Mocking at the development, BJP spokesperson and partys deputy leader in the Lok Sabha Vijay Kumar Malhotra said that it proved the Congress members "lack of interest" in the Parliamentary proceedings. "For the past three days the UPA has been accusing us for not being present in the House. Always it is the duty of the ruling side to make up the quorum, but the Congress members too are not serious enough to be present in the House. When we were the ruling party till a year ago, I as BJPs chief whip always made sure that there were enough members in the House to fulfil the quorum," Malhotra said while addressing press persons. Later, jokingly he said, "when the bell was ringing we stood inside the galleries to make sure that any of our members do not erroneously enter the House." The NDA has been boycotting both the Houses of the Parliament and all committee, around 90, for the past three days as a mark of protest against the UPA governments policy of "not allowing the NDA members to speak" and continuing with the "tainted ministers". The Opposition is demanding removal of Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav from the council of minister since he has been charge-sheeted in the fodder scam case. The deadlock is likely to end on Monday morning after a general body meeting of the NDA.
