Illegal gun factory busted in Patna

Patna: Patna police today busted off an illegal arms factory in Naubatpura locality today following a tip off and took four people into custody. Large number of countrymade arms were recovered in the raid. The factory churning out country made pistols, guns and revolvers was operating in the Sheikhpura village which lies in the Naxal affected Naubatpura area. The police suspect that the factory used to supply arms to the Maoist rebels. "We have information that the last two of the arrested Kamandal Mochi and Ramsharan Mochi might have relations with the Naxalites. It is being probed. It is clear that they were into the trade for years. The total recovery includes 16 countrymade pistols and five rifles, 21 firearms in total. The equipment used in the manufacture of the fiearms have been seized. The factory has completely been destroyed," said Nayar Husnain Khan, SSP Patna. The accused confess that they used to supply the arms at a price. "We sold the pistols for Rs 300 to Rs 400 a piece. We never supplied to the Naxalites," said Sanjee Sharma, accused. The police are investigating the arms trail to establish where the arms were being supplied. The latest round of police action comes after a stern instruction from the Election Commission to crack down on criminals in the state ahead of the coming assembly polls.

Food, medicines airlifted to blockaded Manipur (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Several tonnes of food and medicines were airlifted to Manipur where a Naga group, All Naga Students Association of Manipur (ANSAM), has blocked roads and cut off supplies for nearly two months. Four Indian Air Force (IAF) cargo planes brought about 40 tones of medicines, edible oil, sugar, pulses and other supplies to Imphal after the State Government sought Centre's help. "The government of Manipur wanted some essential commodities to be sent to them urgently so today we have organized supply of essential commodities by air. Already three sorties, according to my information, have been made from Guwahati to Imphal and by evening about 40-45 tones of essential supplies would reach Imphal," said Rajeev Aggarwal, Joint secretary in the Home Ministry, in New Delhi. Hundreds of goods-laden trucks are stranded on Manipur's highways and a fuel shortage has caused long queues in several parts of the state. But officials say have been ensuring a steady supply from day one. "Immediately after the blockade started, government of India has been in constant touch with government of Manipur and as well as with the government of Nagaland and Assam from where the supplies are to be sent to Manipur. During this period more than 1000 trucks carrying essential supplies like petroleum products, food grains have reached Manipur," Aggarwal said. Naga group living in Manipur began the blockade on June 19, leading to a severe shortage of food and fuel in the state's capital Imphal. Manipur Chief Minister Ibobi Singh, however, has said the blockade of the national highways since June 22 by the All Naga Students Association of Manipur (ANSAM) may end soon.

Bangladesh and India for trouble-free border (Go To Top)
by Nazrul Islam

Dhaka: Bangladesh and India have agreed to maintain a peaceful and trouble-free border between the two countries as the close-door neighbours had tension over the construction of barbed-wire fence on the Indo-Bangla border. "We both agreed on the need for the best management of our border. We also agreed that it is necessary to check these illegal movements and activities which are only resulting in loss of revenue to both governments, and the criminalisation of the border and exacerbating relations between the two border guarding forces," the Indian External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh told a joint press conference after official talks with his Bangladesh counterpart M Morshed Khan on Saturday. Natwar who arrived here on a three-day visit earlier in the day told both the sides were committed to maintaining a peaceful and trouble-free border although there have been some differences in interpretation of the 1975 border guidelines. Both the foreign ministers emphasised stronger relations between the two next-door neighbours and discussed a number of issues, including trade gap and trade barriers, illegal migration from Bangladesh to India, Myanmar-Bangladesh-India gas pipeline, possible extradition of an Indian leader charged for insurgency and the reforms of the United Nations Security Council. This is the first ever by any Indian minister since the Congress led UPA government assumed to office in 2004 in India. Bangladesh gave utmost importance to the visit with its Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan saying "The visit would consider as a milestone for improvement of bi-lateral relations between the two countries."
