by Pankaj Yadav

New Delhi: JD-U Lok Sabha member Prabhunath Singh today vociferously raised in the Lower House the "wrong portrayal" of the 12th century King Prithviraj Chauhan in 11th standard NCERT history book, which describes the King as an "absconder". Raising the matter under Rule 377 and bringing it to the knowledge of the HRD ministry, Prabhunath Singh said that the fifth chapter of the NCERT book says that the King "fled" while fighting Afghan invader Muhammad Ghori during the second battle of Tarain. Prabhunath further said, "according to the book, after he fled the battle scene, King Ghori captured Chauhan and allowed to remain the ruler of Ajmer. But, later, after discovering that Chauhan was hatching a conspiracy against him, Ghori killed him." "Since childhood we have been listening instances of bravery of King Prithviraj Chauhan, but the NCERT history book for 11th standard describes him a coward who ran away while fighting Ghori," Singh said in Lok Sabha, adding "I hope the union HRD ministry would take this into its notice and stop such portrayal of the King." Incidentally, neither HRD Minister Arjun Singh, nor his junior was present in the Lower House while Prabhunath raised the matter.

Centre to continue airlifting supplies to blockaded Manipur (Go To Top)

New Delhi: The Centre today said that supply of foods and essential items to blockaded Manipur would continue. "The essential supplies must be maintained at any cost for Manipur. So there is no question of this kind of situation not being sustained. Now as you know there are two highways NH 53 and NH 39.... which has opened after a gap of seven years. Now it can take because of rainy conditions, road conditions, bridges conditions only 70 trucks a day and maximum of about 10 tones of weight," Home (Interior) secretary VK Duggal told reporters in New Delhi. Several tonnes of food and medicines are being airlifted to Manipur where a Naga group, All Naga Students Association of Manipur (ANSAM), has blocked roads and cut off supplies for nearly two months. On Saturday, four Indian Air Force (IAF) cargo planes brought about 40 tones of medicines, edible oil, sugar, pulses and other supplies to Imphal after the State Government sought Centre's help. Hundreds of goods-laden trucks are stranded on Manipur's highways and a fuel shortage has caused long queues in several parts of the state. Manipur has been cut from the rest of the country since the blockade began. The Imphal-Guwahati NH 39 and Imphal-Silchar NH 53 are completely deserted since the starting of the blockade. Naga student's body ANSAM launched their economic blockade against Manipur government's decision to declare June 18 as a holiday to observe "state integrity day."

Mahatma Gandhi egg promotion advt. triggers controversy  (Go To Top)
by Lokendra Singh

Jaipur: By attributing a statement to Mahatma Gandhi that Egg is a vegetarian food in its advertisement seeking to promote consumption of eggs, a private firm has stirred a controversy in Jaipur. The sales promotin advertisment released by Bromark Chicken, a subsidiary of the National Egg Coordination Committee, has become the centre of a political controversy. The National Egg Committee officials believe that Gandhiji made a statement in London in 1931 that eggs being produced in farms were totally vegetarian and good for the health of children. Following the controversy, Rajasthan Congress party has and demanded the withdrawal of the advertisement. "Mahatma Gandhi had always protested against consumption of non-vegetarian food and liquor by enlightened people. The whole country has followed his path of non-violence and truth. So, the publication, depicting Gandhi with eggs as the brand ambassador, is an insult to the Father of the Nation and entire nation" says Raghu Sharma, spokesperson of the Rajasthan Congress. Raghu Sharma wants the Government to express regret for permitting such an advertisement to be published. Bromark Chicken has now drawn a line between "desi eggs" and "poultry eggs. While desi eggs are non-vegetarian, poultary eggs are pure vegetarian, says Bhagvati Singh, Area Sales Manager, (Rajasthan) Bromark Chicken. He says: "These days, consumption of eggs is recommended even by doctors".
