Blast outside I-Day celebrations venue in Srinagar

     Srinagar: There was a powerful bomb explosion this morning near the heavily guarded Bakshi Stadium, the venue of Independence Day function, hours before Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was to unfurl the national flag at the stadium. An improvised explosive device (IED) was planted in a flowerbed inside Iqbal Park near the main entrance to the Stadium. "It was an IED fitted with a time device and it exploded without causing any injuries. Members of the bomb disposal squad searched the park area with mine detectors and sanitize it before the arrival of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed," a police officer said. The area has been sealed off for last five days and security forces were conducting a routine surveillance of the area. DIG (Central Kashmir) H K Lohia said that there was no damage caused by the explosion. Hundreds of school children and security personnel had assembled near the venue to participate in the celebrations. There was panic and confusion everywhere following the blast. So far, no group has claimed the responsibility for the explosion.

Govinda's family members injured, secretary killed (Go To Top)

     Jaipur: Secretary of filmstar and Member of Parliament Govinda today died and the actor's family members got injured when a truck rammed into the Toyota Qualis in which they were travelling. The family was going to Ajmer from Jaipur to participate in the Urs celebrations. The accident occured on a 6-plane Highway at around 12:15 pm, where fast driving vehicles is a usual feature. The driver of the All injured were immediately rushed to the the Siwan Mansingh Hospital. The doctors declared the Secretary "brought dead". Dr PPS Mathur told that Govinda's daughter had suffered injuries on the neck and face while his wife was not in a state of consciousness. Govinda was not accompanying his family at the time of accident. After listening the news he left for Jaipur from Mumbai. His elder brother, Kirti kumar, has also left for Jaipur to see the family. Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundra Raje Scindia also reached the hospital to see the condition of the star's family members.

Mumbai, Thane leptospirosis death toll rises to 233 (Go To Top)

    Mumbai: With 91 more deaths in the metropolis and Thane district since Sunday night, the death toll due to leptospirosis and other water-borne diseases has risen to 233, Maharashtra Directorate of Health Services sources said today. Mumbai alone has accounted for 128 deaths since the July 26 deluge, the sources said. Meanwhile, 958 persons have been admitted to various hospitals in Mumbai with complaints of fever in the last 24 hours, while the total figure since July 27 is 6311. A medical team from Delhi and Port Blair had analysed 61 samples from Kalyan, Dombivili and Ullasnagar, confirming 36 of them as cases of leptospirosis. Maharashtra has already lost 1,099 lives in rain-related incidents since July 26, while 60 were still missing. Meanwhile, the state Governor, S M Krishna, has been visiting some civic-run hospitals in the city and met patients suffering from various water-borne diseases. Krishna visited Nair, Lokmanya Tilak (Sion) and KEM Hospitals, all run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Speaking to mediapersons later, he said the recent natural calamity should make us prepare better to deal with the aftermath of such tragedies. Congress president Sonia Gandhi, whose party is heading the DF Government in Maharashtra, had visited several flood-hit areas in Mumbai and western Maharashtra on Saturday and had then assured that she would push for more assistance for relief and rehabilitation. Meanwhile, leading pharma companies have resumed production of various life-saving drugs to meet the growing demand following the outbreak of diseases. These expensive drugs were out of production in India due to the government's price control policy on essential medicines. However, considering gravity of the current situation, several companies like Pfizer and Unichem started producing the antibiotic 'doxycyclin' for leptospirosis which was out of production till recently. ''This is a part of our social responsibility in response to the alarmingly high number of cases post-floods, said a spokesperson from a leading pharma firm.
