Harry Potter can make zoos interesting for kids (Go To Top)

Washington: A new study conducted by researchers at the University of the West of England, suggests that films such as 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', could help zoos educate visitors about the world of wild animals and spark interest in creatures which would otherwise not get a second glance. The study led by Dr. Nils Lindahl-Elliot investigated displays and visitors' responses to them at Bristol Zoo Garden and Paignton Zoo Environmental Park, where 'naturalistic' ways of presenting the animals have been introduced in recent years. According to the report, seeing certain films led children to show much greater interest in displays and even how the animals were classified by the zoos. Several had watched 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets', in which the Bassilisk was a monstrous snake. "When the children saw the plumed basilisks at the zoos and were told by their parents what the animal was, they asked 'Basilisk? Is that lizard a basilisk?' 'Isn't a basilisk a snake? ' Or 'Why wasn't the basilisk in Harry Potter a basilisk?'," Eliott added. "Visitors tended to attribute human characteristics to the wild animals, identifying the 'Mummy lion' and the 'Daddy lion', or comparing sleeping habits with those of the tabby at home. Both parents and children used certain species to describe themselves, and each other - for example, several children likening their dads to gorillas. So the zoos were rich spaces not just for learning about the animals, but about the relation between humans and animals, and us and our own family," Eliott added.

Croton plants can combat cancer (Go To Top)

Washington: A new study conducted by researchers at The State University of New Jersey has found that the Croton plant has a compound that helps combats pancreatic cancer. The cancer-fighting compound, 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13- acetate and generally known as TPA, is found in an oil drawn from seeds of the skin-irritating shrub, the croton plant (Croton tiglium L.). The team led by Allan H. Conney initiated studies with the pancreas using three human pancreatic cancer cell lines with different molecular properties. In laboratory cultures, the scientists applied TPA to cells from these lines and found that growth of the pancreatic cancer cells was inhibited by TPA when used in concentrations that are achievable in humans - levels that should not be toxic to people. The researchers injected cells from the human cancer cell lines into immunodeficient mice - mice specifically bred so that their immune systems would not reject foreign biological material - to grow pancreatic tumors against which the compounds could be tested. Once the tumors were well established, Conney and his team began treating the mice with TPA alone and in combination with ATRA. They observed inhibition of tumor growth and reduction in tumor size. The researchers saw a substantial increase in apoptosis (programmed cell death) and a substantial decrease in mitosis (cells reproducing) in the tumors.

Siegfried said that the residents of F**king used to be very "conservative" people and did not know the meaning of the town's name until the arrival of British and American soldiers in 1945. He also said that they had once thought of renaming it but later changed their mind. "We had a vote last year on whether to rename the town, but decided to keep it as it is. After all, F**king has existed for 800 years, probably when a Mr F**k or the F**k family moved into the area. The 'ing' was added as a word for settlement," Fox News quoted him as saying.
