Gene linked to ageing discovered  (Go To Top)

Washington: Researchers at Cold Spring Harbor laboratory have found that the loss of a gene called p63 accelerates aging in mice. "To study how the p63 gene works, we devised a system for eliminating it from adult mouse tissues. What struck us right away was that these p63 deficient mice were aging prematurely," lead researcher Alea Mills said. Mills and her colleagues devised a sophisticated molecular genetic technique that enabled them to eliminate both copies of the gene from particular tissues--including skin and other multi- layered epithelial tissues--after the animals reached maturity. The effects of premature aging observed in these p63 deficient mice (image available on request) were hair loss, reduced fitness and body weight, progressive curvature of the spine, and a shortened lifespan. "Aging and cancer are two sides of the same coin. In one case, cells stop dividing and in the other, they can't stop dividing. We suspect that having the right amount of the p63 protein in the right cells at the right time creates a balance that enables organisms to live relatively cancer-free for a reasonably long time," Mills added.

Shorter men make better husbands (Go To Top)

London: While tall , dark and handsome has always remained an un-disputed description of a perfect man, it is the shorter men, who stand above the rest, when it comes to perfect husbands, claims a recent study. The findings published in the journal Biological Psychology reveals that, women regard taller men as excellent for a fling but see short men as better companions to settle down with. Researchers are of the opinion that women find taller men more desirable, when are merely looking for the thrill of an affair or want to become pregnant, because they see their partner's height as a sign of their masculinity and their ability to father healthy children. "Taller men have higher social status, earn more and are at lower risk from illness," the Daily Mail quoted anthropologist Dr. Boguslaw Pawlowski from the University of Wroclaw in south-west Poland as saying. "They also have better reproductive success. Not very nice people," he added. However, they also claim that the benefits quickly wear off, along with the initial attraction, as there are women drooling over handsome men all the time, which may take away their attention from their family. "You don't want to be surrounded by these guys all the time. The guys who are real leaders of the pack tend to not be very nice people. You don't want them around kids, they can be violent and leave you for someone else," said Evolutionary psychologist Dr Nick Neave. "If they are very handsome and very desirable there will be lots of other women competing for their attention. For a short-term relationship, you want somebody you are sexually attracted to, they don't have to be the best to get on with. But for a long- term relationship, yes, you are having kids together, but you are also raising them and educating them. For that you want someone much more amenable, who has resources and who is kind and caring," he added. Dr. Neave, of Northumbria University asks men not be too quick to blame their height for any lack of success with women. "Women look at the whole picture - how tall a guy is, how he dresses, how he speaks, how educated he is and what he does for a living," he said.

Walking to school encourages physical activity in kids (Go To Top)

London: Walking to and from school, instead of travelling by car, encourages physical activity in adolescents, a study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) has found. According to researchers, walking to school is associated with higher overall moderate to vigorous physical activity throughout the day compared with travelling by car, bus, or train. During the course of study, researchers measured moderate to vigorous physical activity among students aged 13-14 years. The children were asked to wear accelerometers (an instrument used to measure vertical movement) throughout the day and were surveyed about their journey to school. They were split into three different groups - those who travelled both ways by car, bus, or train; those who walked both ways; and those who walked one way. Researchers found that those who walked both ways accrued the most minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity throughout the day, followed by those walking one way. In all, 87 percent of pupils using a car, bus, or train, accumulated an average of 60 or more minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity on weekdays compared with 90 percent of those who walked one way and 100 percent of pupils who walked both ways. Similar results have been reported for 10 year old children, although among 5 year olds, mode of travel to school did not significantly affect overall physical activity, suggesting that walking to school may be more effective for older children.
