Uttar Pradesh villages go to polls amid tight security

     Varanasi/Meerut (Uttar Pradesh): Voting for the first phase of Panchayati (local village) polls in of Uttar Pradesh began on a peaceful note on Wednesday. Heavy security arrangements were in place to avert violence and booth capturing, a regular feature in the state, said to be one of the most backward in the country. Officials also confirmed that shoot-at-sight orders had been issued in several districts against those trying to disrupt polling and preventive arrests were made besides depositing of licensed arms. "People are very excited here. They are queuing up since morning. The authorities have made proper arrangements. No untoward incident has taken place so far," said Ramesh Singh, a villager from the outskirts of Varanasi. At least 3,50,000 employees had been put on duty at the 19,915 polling centres of which 7,289 had been declared most sensitive and 6,734 sensitive. A total of 1,10,547 candidate had filed nominations for the posts of village heads of which 16,036 later withdrew their names. Officials have said personnel of state civil police and home guards have been deployed during polling and central forces are likely to be available after August 18 for the next phase of the polls, which includes elections to the city municipalities. A total of 52,000 village heads would be elected in the four- phased polls besides a record number of over a million members of village committees, known as panchayats.

25 hurt as bomb blasts rock Bangladesh (Go To Top)

      Dhaka: A series of bomb explosions were reported in capital Dhaka, southwestern Khulna city, northeastern Sylhet city and Munshiganj district, besides a dozen more places in Bangladesh,injuring at least 25 people, according to reports. The explosions occurred between 11 and 11.30 a.m., informed sources said. In Dhaka, television channels reported that the bombs had exploded in front of Dhaka's Zia International Airport and several government offices. Leaflets of the banned Jamaatul Mujahedin, Bangladesh, led by the so-called "Bangla Bhai" were found in some of the areas where the bombs exploded, the reports said. Further details were awaited at the time of the filing of this report.

     Lahore: A Pakistan boy gunned down his teenage sister for allegedly having an affair with her cousin. Asif who lived with his mother Nazo and sister Sumera, suspected his sister of having an affair with their cousin Zeeshan, and used to frequently quarrel with Sumera over this. Early on Tuesday, he found Sumera along with Zeeshan, got enraged and shot her in the head, before fleeing from the spot, reports the Daily Times. Nazo found Sumera lying in a pool of blood, and accompanied by Zeeshan, rushed her to Mayo Hospital, where she died after treatment. Although at first, Nazo and Zeeshan told police that robbers entered their house and shot Sumera when she resisted, later they approached Badamibagh police to register a case against Asif, saying that Asif had shot Sumera over a monetary dispute.

Sahara to acquire IT distribution co. SES Tech Ltd. (Go To Top)

     Mumbai: Sahara Computers and Electronics Limited (SCEL), a joint venture partnership between the South African IT major, Sahara Computers (Pty) Ltd., and Sahara India Pariwar, today announced that it had signed a MOU for the acquisition of the largest fully Indian owned IT distribution company - SES Technologies Ltd. to help it expand its penetration significantly in India. SES shall continue to trading under its current name and style. The investment comes short on the heels of the initial investment in SCEL underlining the tremendous commitment and faith that the promoters of Sahara Computers (Pty) Ltd, have in the growing Indian market. The acquisition is important for SCEL in that it allows SCEL to leverage off the wide range of vendor agencies, infrastructure, skilled and experienced sales and support staff across the country and an infrastructure that has allowed SES to be the number 1 fully Indian owned IT distribution company.

BJP to oppose FDI in retail sector (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: The main Opposition party the BJP today said that it will oppose tooth and nail any FDI in the retail sector, if allowed by the UPA Government. The Opposition party decided this at a BJP parliamentary party meeting held this morning under the chairmanship of former premier Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Announcing this before media persons, BJP spokesman VK Malhotra said, "the BJP would block any attempt by the Government to bring about FDI in retailing sector as it would affect the common man, especially the hawkers and small time shop-keepers."

Sachin Tendulkar starts batting practice after elbow surgery (Go To Top)

     Mumbai: Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar today said that he has started batting practice after undergoing elbow surgery in May. The 32-year old who has been sidelined since his surgery, has been tentatively named in the squad for next month's two-test series in Zimbabwe. Tendulkar, who started practise session on Tuesday, said that he would follow the schedule as advised by his physio. "The elbow is okay and I am taking gradual steps. I have started practicing with the advice of the physio. Yes, the practise session was good. I did not play many balls. The physio has organised the entire schedule and I will practice according to it " Tendulkar told reporters at a corporate function in Mumbai. Tendulkar will have a fitness test before deciding if he can travel. The first test starts on September 13. Tendulkar, among the game's premier batsmen for a decade, had struggled with the tennis elbow injury for almost a year before eventually deciding to undergo surgery. He has suffered from a spate of injuries over the last two years in his back, toe, finger, ankle and elbow, attributed mainly to wear and tear causedby non-stop cricket since he emerged on the international scene in 1989 as a 16-year-old.
