Railways turn around for Lalu's sake

New Delhi/Patna: Bihar politicians in Union Cabinet have begun a turf war at the cost of the exchequer through newspapers, as the state goes for re-poll a couple of months later. "A visionary, who scripted the financial turn-around of Indian Railways," reads a series of newspaper advertisements released by Indian Railways with Railway Minister Lalu Prasad's photographs. "Hum laye hein thufan se, Rail ko nikal ke," (We brought the Railways out of a storm), reads another. According to Railway Ministry sources, the Railways have spent Rs. 1.2 crore since the dissolution of Bihar assembly for "projecting" its Minister, which was equal to the expenditure on highlighting the ministry's achievements during the whole financial year, a year ago. "This is nothing, but jugglery of figures," said Virendra Prasad Yadav, President of the Bihar Unit of Janta Dal (U). He said how can a minister who hardly remains in Delhi steer the Railway Ministry out of red, with no change in the passenger or freight fares.

Not to be left behind, Lalu's bete noire Ram Vilas Paswan has also entered into the fray at the cost of the PSUs under his Steel Ministry. "Indian Steel Industry " marching ahead," reads the advertisement with the photograph of Paswan. Paswan has also given his vision for 2020 in a bid to woe the "poor voters of Bihar", mostly illiterate. As the poll schedule is yet to be announced by the Election Commission, Lalu and Paswan could continue to force their ministries into spending on the self-aggrandizement for some more time. "If this visionary had turned around our home state, which he has been virtually ruling for the last 15 years, Bihar would have been one of the most advanced states in the country," commented a Railway Ministry official from Lalus home state.
