WB replaces India-born official with American for Baglihar

Lahore: The World Bank has following objections raised by Pakistan over the appointment of an Indian born official in the panel of judges for the Baglihar dam issue replaced the official with an American. The World Bank had earlier appointed Praful Patel, the Regional Vice President, South Asia Region for reviewing Pakistan's complaint over the Baglihar dam. However, following objections raised by Pakistan over the issue, the World replaced Patel with an American citizen, The News quoted the Acting Pakistan Commissioner for Indus Water Shiraz Jameel Memon while addressing a Hamdard Thinkers Forum as saying. He further said that Pakistan had decided to raise up the issue with the World Bank only because India had not stopped construction on the dam despite several attempts by Pakistan to amicably solve the issue through talks. "India changed its attitude on several occasions and accelerated work on the dam. India refused to sign on a settlement on Baglihar dam reached during secretary-level negotiations. The Indus Waters Commission had informed the government time and again about development on the construction of the dam, and it was the duty of the government to take decision about future line of action," the paper quoted Memon as saying.

Shiraz Memon said Pakistan had sought opinion of two leading experts about Pakistan's case on Baglihar dam, adding that "both supported three out of four objections raised by Pakistan and expressed the opinion that Pakistan should raise this issue". Members of the Forum on the other hand asked the Pakistan government to take a strong step while dealing with India, considering the repeated attempts by New Delhi to violate the issue. "Pakistan should strengthen its lobby on contentious issues with India and take a tough stance," the forum added.

Indian doctor to marry spin wiz Muralitharan (Go To Top)

Chennai: Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan now has an Indian connection. The former world record holder of highest wickets in Test cricket is set to tie the knot with Madhimalar, a Chennai based doctor, on March 21. Madhimalar said she had little interest in the game though her father was a cricket buff. "Honestly, I am doing my homework in cricket now. Not much of a sports fan but my father was a diehard cricket fan. He loved cricket a lot. I knew that Murali is a cricketer and belonged to the Sri Lankan team but not much about the game," she said.
