Kolkata: As many as four unidentified persons today abducted a college girl from a posh colony near Kolkata. 21 year-old Roma Jhawar, a Commerce undergraduate, was abducted at gunpoint a few metres away from her residence while she was on her way to the college with a friend. The incident sparked off tension in the area. "There were four five people who kidnapped her. They said we want Roma," said Sukumar Mondal, a driver to the abducted girl's family. Goa crisis: BJP to approach Bombay HC (Go To Top)

New Delhi: The BJP on Friday decided to take the battle for Goa to the court. The party will approach the Bombay High Court against the "unconstitutional and arbitrary" dismissal of its government in Goa. The decision came after top BJP leaders, including former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, met in Delhi to formulate the party's strategy after the dismissal of the Manohar Parrikar government in Goa. On Thursday, senior party leaders had petitioned President A P J Abdul Kalam, asking him to overturn Goa Governor SC Jamir's decision to sack the BJP government. Party leaders also demanded the recall of Jamir and reinstatement of the BJP government in the state. At today's meeting, the leaders emphasised on fighting the issue "politically" and cornering the Congress-led UPA government both within and outside Parliament. The leaders are also understood to have discussed the possibility of launching a countrywide agitation on the issue, the sources added.

Former and present Goa CMs in Delhi  (Go To Top)

New Delhi: As the sacked Goa CM Manohar Parrikar is camping in New Delhi and discusing strategies with BJP's top brass, the present Goa CM Pratapsingh Rane also arrives in the Capital on Friday to meet the Congress party high command over the cabinet portfolio distribution issue. Rane had inducted six cabinet ministers including four non- Congress members taking the strength of his ministry up to eight. Only two of the newly six sworn in belong to Congress - former Chief Minister Luisinho Fernandes and Dayanand Narvekar. The other four are very crucial for the stability of the new Congress government. These non-Congress members are Wilfred D`souza of NCP, a Chief Minister for brief spells in 1994 and 1998, Sudhin Davlikar of MGP and BJP MLAs Isidoro Fernandes and Pandurang Madgaikar who resigned from the assembly last week contributing to the fall of BJP-led ministry. Rane was sworn in as chief minister and independent MLA Philipe Neri Rodriguez as his deputy on Tuesday soon after the dismissal of the BJP-led government by Governor S C Jamir. Meanwhile, top BJP leaders including Vajpayee would also be meeting to work out party's strategy following the dismissal of its government in Goa. BJP met President A P J Abdul Kalam on Thursday and demanded the recall of Governor S C Jamir and reinstatement of the BJP government.
