Kidnapped Delhi child rescued from Orissa

Bhubaneshwar: Orissa police rescued the 18-month old Arpit Diwan on Saturday in Sundergarh district of Orissa and arrested the prime suspect in the abduction, the family maid Savitri Minz. "The one-and-a-half-year-old child Arpit Diwan was rescued safely and we are in touch with Delhi Police for carrying out the formalities," said Y K Jethwa, Sundergarh SP. Arpit was kidnapped from his home in the Capital on January 31 by the Oriya maid Savitri when his parents were out of home. The police after getting information raided a premise in a village near Rourkela, rescued the boy and detained Savitri. Preliminary interrogations indicate that frustration was the reason behind the crime. The incident had occurred on January 31 afternoon when Arvind, a software engineer with Coca-Cola, and his wife, Bharti, who works in a non-government organisation named Population International Service, were not at home in Srininvaspuri in South Delhi. Their elder son, Ayush, was away in school. When he returned, he found the door of his house locked, after which a neighbour called up Bharti to tell her that Shavitri was not at home. Bharti returned and found that the house had been ransacked and Shavitri was missing along with her son Arpit. She called up Arvind, after which the police were called in. According to the Dewan couple, the maid was very affectionate towards Arpit. He had also started liking her within a few days.

Ravikant is the third student to return back home since the series of kidnappings rocked the whole state and political players, ahead of the state assembly elections, hijacked the issue. Ravikant was held captive for a fortnight. Ravikant's father admitted that a ransom of 25 lakh rupees was demanded but police denied payment of any money. According to the Police, they acted on clue provided by seven persons including a constable who were taken into custody for interrogation in connection with the kidnapping.
