Two-doctor panel to examine Geelani

New Delhi: A two-doctor panel has been set-up to examine S.A.R.Geelani, the Delhi University lecturer who was shot at on Tuesday night. Geelani was earlier aquitted in the December 13, 2001, Parliament attack case. Out of the two doctors, one will be a surgeon and another a forensic sciences expert. They will report on the health status of Geelani. They will also conduct a ballistic test of the bullets that Geelani sustained. The test will help ascertain the weapon used in the attack. On Friday, the Delhi Police, said that they may have lost crucial evidence as neither Geelani's family nor his advocates informed the police of the attack well in time. The Home Minister, Shivraj Patil, also said that the government was open to hand over the Geelani shootout case to CBI. Geelani was shot at outside his lawyer, Nandita Haksar's house on Tuesday evening. He is now out of ICU and according to doctors, he is recovering well. In the meantime, various protests were organised to condemn the Geelani incident. The DU teacher's friends, colleagues and students took to the streets shouting anti-police slogans. Two days after the Parliament attack, Geelani, who was a teacher of Arabic at the Zakir Hussain College since 1998, was arrested by the Delhi police and was charged as one of the main conspirators of the terrorist attack. He was arrested by the police on the basis of intercepts of a call from his mobile phone to his stepbrother in Srinagar. Later, he was found guilty by a POTA court and was subsequently awarded death sentence. However, the Delhi High Court in 2003 found that the evidence against him was inadmissible in court and acquitted him. Soon after being released, Geelani started a campaign against the human rights violations in Kashmir.
