War an option to solve (Go To Top)

Baglihar: Pak Minister Islamabad: Even as India and Pakistan may be trying their utmost to solve the 57-year-old Kashmir dispute, the reason for numerous conflicts between New Delhi and Islamabad, Pakistan's Federal Education Minister and former ISI DG Qazi Javed Ashraf has said that war could be an option for settling the Baglihar Dam issue. The News quoted him as saying that India had constructed several dams in violations of the Indus Waters Treaty and though Islamabad had held negotiations with New Delhi on all controversial dams, the truth was that Islamabad had failed to get the desired results. "What is the option? War is the only option," the paper quoted him as saying. He said that Pakistan should put little hope on the World Bank efforts to resolve the issue. He further added that the Kishanganga hydro-electric project being undertaken by India, was also in violation of the Indus Waters Treaty.

BCCI to finalise Pak tour itinerary on Thursday (Go To Top)

New Delhi: The Programmes and Fixtures Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will meet at the Taj Palace Hotel here from 11 a.m. on Thursday to ratify the Pakistan cricket team's final itinerary in India. The BCCI will also discuss other issues, including the awarding of television rights, for the high-profile series. Ahmedabad, a proposed venue to host a Test match in the series between the arch-rivals, is expected to figure prominently in tomorrow's Working Committee meeting after Pakistan's refusal play there on security grounds. Simultaneously, External Affairs Minister K.Natwar Singh will be meeting with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Shaharyar Khan in Islamabad to discuss the issue threadbare. Pakistan expressed reservations of playing a Test or even a one- dayer in Ahmedabad which witnessed communal riots in 2002, and this may probably leave BCCI with no other option but to change the venue. The Board has tentatively fixed Mohali, Bangalore and Ahmedabad as the venues for the three Tests while Kochi, Vishakhapatnam, Kanpur, Jamshedpur and Delhi are proposed to host the five one- dayers. The vexed TV rights issue is also in the agenda for discussion and BCCI is likely to take a decision on the matter tomorrow. The Board had told the Madras High Court last week that it would not finalise the telecast rights for the series till February 17. The BCCI counsel had given an undertaking to the court, following a petition by Zee Telefilms Ltd, that it would not finalise tenders or contracts for telecast of cricket matches to be played in the country including the India-Pak series till February 17.
