51 trapped security personnel rescued

     Jammu: Fifty-one security personnel, who were trapped inside the Jawahar tunnel for more than a fortnight, were rescued from 2.4-km long southern tube of Jawahar tunnel, informed official sources. They were shifted to a Rashtriya Rifles' base in Banihal, 190 kms from Jammu. It was a combined effort of Indo-Tibetan Border police and police personnel, who rescued the 51 security men out of 305 trapped inside the tunnel through ropes. According to the sources, some more security personnel are being rescued in the same manner. The security personnel, over 305 from ITBP, IRP and police, were trapped for the last more than 15 days. Due to the heavy snowfall for the last few days, both ends of the tunnel were blocked. Thirty four people are feared killed in the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir as fresh snowfall and rains continued to lash the state over the weekend. Of the 34, 18 have reportedly died in Poonch, six in the Navapachi area of Kishtwar Tehsil in Doda District and 10 in the Gul area of the state's Udhampur District.

Geelani discharged from AIIMS (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: Delhi University lecturer SAR Geelani, acquitted in the Parliament attack case by Delhi High Court, was today discharged from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He was admitted in the hospital a fortnight ago following a murderous assault on him. After being discharged, Geelani, who was on a wheelchair, was received by a group of his associates and well-wishers. Geelani, who is facing trial in the Supreme Court in the Parliament attack case, was shot at outside his lawyer's residence in Vasant Enclave on February 8.

India stops military aid to Nepal (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: India today formally announced that military supplies to Nepal has been put on hold. External Affairs Ministry Spokesman Navtej Sarna told reporters in New Delhi that all military supplies have been suspended from February 1. "In view of the current disturbing conditions in Nepal, it is a fact that no military supplies have been delivered since February 1, 2005," said Sarna. New Delhi, a major donor to Nepal has been providing military assistance to the Royal Nepalese Army to fight the Maoists. This included arms, trucks and helicopters and training assistance to Nepalese army.
