Blow to Goa BJP, MLA resigns

Panaji: The Congress has got a shot in the arm, just ahead of the crucial vote of confidence on February 28, as a BJP MLA Digamber Kamat today resigned from his Goa assembly seat. Kamat handed over his resignation to the Speaker of the legislative assembly in the state. The resignation comes as a blow to the former Chief Minister of Goa, Manohar Parrikar, as Kamat was the Power Minister of his cabinet and was considered only second to him. Kamat will be addressing a press conference with GPCC president Luisinio Falerio soon over the issue. However, both the state units of BJP and Congress had expressed confidence that they would win the confidence vote, but had declined to reveal their strategy. The Manohar Parrikar led BJP government of Goa was dismissed on February 2 by the state Governor S.C.Jamir. Soon after that the Governor sworn in a Congress led ministry headed by Pratapsinh Rane.

After that the former CM Parrikar filed the petition in the Supreme Court after many days of speculation on his action against BJP government's dismissal. The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Chief Minister of Goa, Pratapsinh Rane and the Goa government on a petition filed by former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar challenging the Governor's decision to dismiss the BJP Government. The two-and-half year old Goa government led by the BJP was dismissed shortly after Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar won a controversial vote of confidence amidst pandemonium in the assembly when the Speaker had Independent MLA Philipe Neri Rodriguez removed from the House. Speaker Vishwas Satarkar declared that the one-line motion moved by the Chief Minister reposing confidence in his council of ministers was carried after BJP members raised their hands in support while the entire Congress-led opposition was in the well protesting the eviction of Rodriguez. Immediately after the House was adjourned and the Congress-led opposition met the Governor demanding Parrikar government's dismissal. Congress accused the Speaker of acting as a "stooge" of the government.
