Reliance, other telecom operators in CBI net (Go To Top)

New Delhi: The CBI has launched an inquiry into the alleged scam involving hundreds of crores in rerouting of international calls. CBI will probe top telecom operators including Reliance Infocomm. Department of Telecom and its PSUs have imposed stiff penalties and have launched a major crackdown, which has been challenged by Reliance Infocomm. The probe has been started by the CBI suo motto. It has asked the concerned authorities to furnish relevant details of international telecom traffic, which is alleged to have been rerouted as local calls to avoid payment to levy to telecom PSUs, informed CBI officials. CBI came through the case while investigating the case illegal telephone exchanges, which were busted in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh recently during the agency's special drive on February 2.

According to the CBI, during its investigations into the functioning of illegal exchanges in some of the Southern states, the agency found that some private telecom companies and some officials of Department of Telecommunications were involved. The companies had been asked to provide relevant details to the Economic Offences Wing of the CBI. However, no case has been registered against Reliance or any other company. On February 8, Reliance Infocomm said that the re-routing of international calls was entirely legal. The telecom major said so while justifying its stand before the telecom tribunal, TDSAT. Reliance Infocomm has earlier said to the Department of Telecom (DoT), that there is no justification in DoT's decision to impose penalty, as there was no violation of any of the licence's clauses. While, the government in its counter affidavit, early February, had accused the telecom company of violating the license by illegally routing international calls as local ones to avoid payment of levies to the telecom PSUs. Government has also said that the private telecom operator had misrepresented the facts. A counter-affidavit was filed by DoT responding to the petition filed by Reliance Infocomm, which challenged the penalty of Rs 150 crore imposed on it.
