Screen heartthrobs driving kids towards plastic surgery (Go To Top)

London: The petite screen actresses and hunky actors with perfect bodies are the main inspiration for the teenagers to consider plastic surgery, a new survey has found. ALmost 65 percent boys also admitted that they too felt pressured to tone up their muscles after seeing the macho actors. Just 3 percent thought of themselves as "beautiful" and only 29 percent said they were "attractive", while 15 percent found themselves "very unattractive" and 7 percent "yuk". Bliss magazine editor Chantelle Horton has said that the survey results pointed to a "21st century tragedy". "The endless parade of thin yet curvy, surgically-enhanced celebrities has made young girls obsessed with their own normal lumpy, bumpy bodies. They also feel tremendous pressure from boys who increasingly expect their girlfriends to resemble the perfect celebrity body model they've been fed by a looks-obsessed society," she was quoted by the paper, as saying.

Bhangra comes of age in Britain by Mike Lockey (Go To Top)

London: A major exhibition will be held in Britain sometime in February to pay tribute to the work of artists who have put bhangra on the international music map. To be mounted in Birmingham, the expo "From Soho Road to The Punjab" aims to chart the rise of Bhangra music and culture from its small beginnings to the phenomenon it is today. The expo will display a wide and probably a unique collection of photographs as well as the music itself, besides posters, memorabilia of various kinds, and archive film and video of various performances. The name of the expo - From Soho Road to The Punjab - is a reflection of the historical relevance of Bhangra music, since Soho Road is one of Birmingham's key cultural areas and people who live there, mostly originating in the Punjab, have been instrumental in popularising the sounds of Bhangra.

The exhibition is being curated by Gurshan Chana, himself an experienced photographer. He hopes that the expo will for the first time reveal the cultural relevance of Bhangra in modern Britain and beyond. After all, this Punjabi form of music has already found its way to a greater or lesser degree into the pop songs of Britney Spears and Missy Elliot, who some of you may well have heard. The influence of Bhangra in the UK has been spread by the likes of Malkit Singh, Apna Sangeet and Dr Zeus, and some of you may have heard of them as well... In fact, Malkit Singh in an interview with British newspaper "Eastern Eye" said: "It's a great idea to promote our heroes from the past. Bhangra is such a wonderful thing that it has a language of its own. People all over the world love Bhangra music, even though they may not understand the lyrics. And such is the power of Bhangra that I get unbelievable recognition and overwhelming appreciation everywhere I travel in the world". The interest in the roots of Bhangra is being encouraged beyond this specific expo. As Ammo Talwar, one of the organisers of it said, also in an interview with the Eastern Eye newspaper: "Punjabi folk music is as popular as ever. Many schools want to include Bhangra in their syllabus so we are designing an interactive CD ROM that will contain the cultural and educational significance of the genre". This, as they say, could well be the start of something very big indeed.
