Twenty killed in Iraq bombing

     Baghada: A car bomb exploded outside a police academy south of Baghdad today during a graduation ceremony, killing at least 20 people, a police official said. According to The News, the bomb exploded outside a gate of the academy in Hillah, about 95 kilometers south of Baghdad, said police Capt. Hady Hatef. Twenty people were killed and an unspecified number were injured, he said. That was the latest in a string of attacks against Iraqi police ahead of Jan. 30 elections which insurgents are trying to disrupt.

Reliance bags deep-sea oil and gas block in Oman (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: India's largest private sector oil firm, Reliance Industries Ltd. has bagged a deep-sea oil and gas block in the Gulf of Oman. RIL is also looking for oil assets in Qatar, Iran and Saudi Arabia. A top official of the company said, that they "have got one deep water block in Oman, believed to hold crude oil and condensate reserves." Oman put up three Gulf of Oman deepwater blocks for biding, and Reliance bagged one of them. Reliance officials however, refused to provide details. Also, this is not the first time that Reliance has acquired an oil and gas block outside India. The company already holds a 20 per cent stake in the exploration Block 9 in Yemen, where a significant oil discovery has already been made.

Sensex recovers after early losses (Go To Top)

     Mumbai: The Sensex today recovered after dropping 300-points in the afternoon. It was the largest single day drop for the Sensex since the Black Monday on May 17, 2004. The Sensex recovered from the early set-back and closed at 6458.84 (down 192 points), and the Nifty shed 78 points at 2025.70. It was the selling pressure across the board that pulled the markets down, but sustained buying at lower levels helped the Sensex bounce back in the closing hours of trade. The stocks that plunged on the Sensex included Balaji Telefilms, Asian Hotels, Essar Steel, Morepen Labs, Saw Pipes, Tata Teleservices and Hero Honda. The Reliance group also suffered heavy losses, with IPCL shedding over five per cent. Reliance Energy also lost over two per cent but Reliance Industries firmed up at close. The infotech shares also lost their sheen at the Sensex and came down. While, Wipro and Satyam lost six and five percent respectively, Infosys and NIIT shed around two per cent each, with TCS losing one percent.

Maruti announces nominal price hike (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: Maruti Udyog Limited has announced a nominal increase in price of its models. The increase varies from less than 0.3 per cent to 1.34 per cent for its popular models and variants. According to a press release, the price increase is due to increase in input costs. The prices of select models and variants are given below: The price increase in Maruti 800 will be announced shortly.
