Tsunami benefit cricket match in mid-Feb, says Dutt

New Delhi: Union Sport Minister Sunil Dutt today announced that a benefit cricket match would be held in the country in mid-February to raise funds for the tsunami victims. The venue is yet to be decided. Dutt told reporters in New Delhi that the huge success of the Melbourne ODI between the World XI and the Asia XI encouraged him to think on the same lines and appeal for a benefit match. "The game that was played in Australia collected about 11.1 billion dollars for the tsunami tragedy. We met the union finance minister and we are planning to have a match in mid February. For that we made a appeal to him and he was very receptive," Dutt said. Former BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya said that players would not have any problems in participating as no international matches were scheduled during the period. "Schedules will be drawn. For next two months there is no international cricket being played so all the players will be available for the match," Dalmiya said. The tsunami, which hit on December 26, killed over 156,000 people across South and Southeast Asia, with more than one lakh in Indonesia alone, and left millions injured and homeless. In India the death is around 15,636, including 5624 missing people, most of who, officials say, are presumed to have died.
