Sarpanch gunned down in Karimnagar

     Karimnagar: Naxals belonging to the CPI (ML) Janasakthi gunned down the sarpanch of Rudrangi village in Chandruthi mandal early today, informed the police. According to the police, about 12 naxalites entered the house of Ganga Rajaiah (55), a member of the ruling Congress party, and took him to the martyr's statue in Rudrangi village, where he was shot dead. On the other hand, CPI (ML) Janasakthi Manair Dalam Commander Naresh alias Pantham Narsimlu (26) was killed in an encounter at Avunooru village under Mustabad police station yesterday. The killing of the sarpanch comes as revenge against the alleged encounter. The naxalites also left a note at the scene in which they said Karimnagar SP Rajiv Ratan was responsible for the encounter of Naresh.

     New Delhi: The Indian army , today commemorated its 56th Foundation Day by paying homage to martyred soldiers. Chiefs of the three defence forces, the Army, the Navy and the Air Force, offered floral tributes at the Amar Jawan Jyoti (Eternal Flame) at India Gate memorial in New Delhi. Army Day is observed every year on January 15 to commemorate the Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa's taking over as the commander-in- chief of the Indian army from Sir Francis Butcher, the last British commander, in 1949. Most of Indian army's peace time gallantry medals have been awarded for heroism in battling a 15-year Islamic rebellion in northern Jammu and Kashmir state.

UPA allies may go for 'friendly fight' in Bihar (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: No breakthrough has been achieved yet in the talks between RJD, CPI-M and NCP over seat-sharing for next month's assembly polls in Bihar. In all probability, there would be friendly fights among the UPA partners in Bihar. Among the 'Left' brigade, CPI-M has said that it intends to contest 14 seats in alliance with RJD and Congress in the state. However, a final round of talks is expected to be held today afternoon between the alliance partners. The ruling RJD is also scheduled to release the first list of its candidates for Bihar polls today.
