R-Day parade showcases India's military might

Air Force planes flying past over the Rajpath during the Republic Day celebrations on January 26 in
New Delhi.

     New Delhi: India today celebrated its 56th Republic Day parade at the Rajpath with a spectacular show, displaying the country's military prowess and might. President APJ Abdul Kalam took the salute of the impressive and elegant parade, watched by the chief guest for the occasion Bhutanese King Jigme Singye Wangchuk, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the entire top brass of political and military class. On display were the most sophisticated weapon systems like Agni, Prithvi and Brahmos missiles, T-90 tanks, Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv, unmanned aerial vehicle Searcher MK-II and fighters like Sukhoi-30 MKI jets. While the Army's daredevils presented a dazzling performance on their motorcycles, the Indian Air Force fighters zoomed overhead displaying the aerobatics skills. School children also presented cultural pageants depicting the cultural life of different states.

Two blasts rock Guwahati (Go To Top)

     Guwahati: Two bomb blasts rocked the city this morning before the Republic Day celebrations. No casualties were, however, reported. The police said that the first bomb went off at Dighalipukuri, barely one km away from the Judges' Field where the official Republic Day function was scheduled to be held. Five minutes later another blast took place near the Judges Field.

Army kills 8 villagers mistaking them as militants (Go To Top)

     Guwahati: In a case of mistaken identity, at least eight people were killed when Army troops opened indiscriminate firing at them during a search operation in Hajo village in Kamrup district this morning. IGP (Special Branch) K. Sarma said that the incident took place at interior Gaonpurapalm. He, however, failed to confirm the exact number of deaths. Initial reports said that the incident happened when the Army patrol went to the interior riverine village in the Hajo police station area for some search operation, and opened fire on the villagers mistaking them for militants. Angry villagers have surrounded the army unit in the area. Senior police officials have reached the site and investigation into the incident is on.
