     Ludhiana: Residents of Ludhiana took to the streets following the death of a 16-year-old boy who was being treated by a quack. Protesters said Mahesh, a labourer, died after getting injected by a quack who called himself a child specialist. Mahesh's neighbours presented a mock demonstration on how the quacks play with the lives of innocent people. Rakesh Kumar, a protestor demanded stern action against such quacks. "Though this demonstration we want to wake up the administration who are silent on he functioning of these quacks. They should close the shops run by the quacks. There are many people dying of which we have no information. The administration has to take some action against these murderers," he said. Rajinder Kaur, the Ludhiana Chief Medical Officer (CMO), said an investigation would be ordered in the case. "We read the news in the newspapers. At our level, we will take strict action against the person. Frist we will see that whether he is a registered practitioner or not. If not, we will take action against him," she said. Quacks operate freely in small towns where proper investigating the registration of the doctors is very difficult. According to government records, there are more than 6000 quacks in the state.

Students in Bihar seek Governor's help as kidnappings rise (Go To Top)

     Patna: Students in Bihar today stepped up their protest against the kidnappings of three of their schoolmates. The students held a march to the Governor's House and demanded immediate action to get those kidnapped released. 14 year-old Kishlaya Gupta was kidnapped last week, 12 year-old Ravi Kant went missing since Sunday, and another child was reported missing since Thursday. "Law and order in Patna is deteriorating day by day. Within 10 days five to six students have been kidnapped and no action has been taken by the Governor. We have been coming here for the past two to three days but no ction is being taken. We will protest, we will protest till they are free," said Aditi Singh, a student protestor. School officials said the Governor promised to talk to the provincial and federal authorities to take fast steps for the release of the kidnapped children. "The Governor said that he has called a high-level delegation of the state government and will talk to them. The Governor said that thousands of children who stood outside his office braving the rain has strengthed his resovle to get the children back. He has also assured us that he is in touch with New Delhi as well over the matter," Somail Ahmad, Vice President of Bihar Public School Association, said.

Portugal SC allows Abu Salem's extradition to India (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: Portugal Supreme Court has allowed extradition of 1993 Mumbai bomb serial blasts accused Abu Salem to India. The Supreme Court of Portugal, while deciding on two petitions filed by Salem and the CBI through Portuguese prosecutor general, ruled that Salem could be extradited to India for his trial in major offences, CBI sources said. The Portuguese High court had earlier allowed extradition of Salem to India for trial only in minor offences which included forging of passport. However, the CBI had gone in for appeal against it in the Supreme Court. Simultaneously, Salem had also moved against the High Court for his extradition. The fresh verdict of the Supreme Court came in response to these two petitions.
