'Mr Flood Scam' Goswami remanded in vigilance custody

Patna: A day after he surrendered before a court in Patna in connection with the multi-crore flood-relief scam, Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Gautam Goswami was remanded on Friday to five days vigilance custody even as the state's authorities took steps to suspend him. "Goswami has been suspended after governor Buta Singh gave his nod to the file concerning departmental action against him for his involvement in a criminal case", state Personnel and Administrative Reforms secretary Ravikant said. The suspension was notified late Thursday night. Goswami, who remained on the run for a month even though the Vigilance Bureau probing the case declared him wanted, had surrendered before the special court which remanded him to judicial custody till July 6.

Thapa meets Natwar (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Former Nepalese Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa met External Affairs Minister K.Natwar Singh on Friday and exchanged views with him on the situation prevailing in the Himalayan kingdom. Thapa's 10-day visit to India is the second high profile visit of by a former premier from Nepal. A fortnight ago, Girija Prasad Koirala had visited New Delhi for consultations. Informed sources said that Thapa's tour is aimed at bringing a rapprochement between King Gyanendra of Nepal and opposition parties using India's help. The political and socio-economic situation in Nepal has been quite precarious since King Gyanendra's decision on February 1 this year to impose an emergency in that country for almost three months. After his meeting with Singh, Thapa said that the Indian Government continues to be concerned over the situation prevailing in Nepal and has advocated restoration of democracy at the earliest.

Sunil Dutt's daughter Priya to contest in Mumbai North-West by-poll (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Priya Dutt, the daughter of former union minister Sunil Dutt, will be the Congress' candidate from Mumbai North-West, party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said today. The date for the by-poll has, however, not been announced yet. The seat fell vacant after former Minister of State for Sports Sunil Dutt passed away on May 25. Accompanied by her brother and Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, Priya met the Congress president Sonia Gandhi this morning at 10 Janpath. Priya's candidature from the parliamentary seat was a foregone conclusion since she was seen as the political successor of Sunil Dutt. Right from the days when the veteran film actor had entered politics, Priya used to actively help her father and single handedly organise his political engagements, especially during elections. Earlier, rumours were rife that Sanjay Nirupam, who had fought unsuccessfully against Sunil Dutt as a Shiv Sena candidate and had a couple of months joined the Congress, was putting forth his claim for the party's candidature from the seat.

Sonia Gandhi meets Left leaders, issues still stalemated (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Returning from her five-day holiday in Shimla, UPA Chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi got down to business in the Indian capital on Friday, focussing her attention on cajoling and placating peeved leaders of various Left parties, hoping to get them to come around on the government's decision to go ahead with the hike in fuel prices and the divestment of the public sector Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). At the time of the filing of this report, both sides were non- committal about which way the political currents were flowing. As of now, the deliberations seem stalemated though Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has described the issues in question as "minor hiccups" in the overall scheme of things during an interview with Singapore's Straits Times recently. Friday's meeting, attended by CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat and CPI National Secretary D Raja, came a day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and top Congress leaders, including Gandhi and Union Ministers P Chidambaram, Arjun Singh, Shivraj Patil and Ghulam Nabi Azad, discussed the issue.
