Sonia Gandhi assures Gujarat flood affected all aid

     Vadodara: Congress president and Chairperson of United Progressive Alliance (UPA), Sonia Gandhi today visited the flood affected areas of Gujarat and said that all assistance would be provided to victims of the calamity. She visited the flood-affected areas accompanied by Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee. Both visited the worst hit Karelibaug and Kalyannagar slums on the banks of Vishwamitri River that was flooded in the torrential rains and spoke to the flood affected people, including women and children who have lost their homes and belongings. Two days ago, Home Minister Shivraj Patil had announced a relief package of Rs.500 crore after undertaking an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas.

     Mumbai: Renowned defence lawyer Majid Memon was on Monday, shot at by two unidentified persons outside his Bandra residence, in the Mumbai suburbs. The two assailants were on motorbike. Reports said that one round of fire hit his car when he was moving for court along with his son, Zulfi Memon, police security guard, constable Jhadav, and his driver. Immediately after the incident, two phone calls also came to his residence number. The person claiming to be from the Pujari gang asked weather Majid Memon was alive. He also threatened to eliminate Majid "This is totally a chaotic situation. If something happened to me then it would send a wrong signal to whole judiciary system. It's not that I just fight for minorities only. I have also fought for many Hindus like Anna Hazare. So the question of saving minorities only should not be raised," said Majid Memon. Police have registered a case of attempt to murder under Section 307 of the IPC, and are carrying out an investigation in the matter. Police have also decided to beef his security and provide him with extra cover. "Two persons on a motor bike today fired at Majid Memon's car, nearly 100 metres away from his house at Bandra. Police has registered a case of attempt to murder (IPC 307). The investigations are on and we are looking into all the aspects," said Amitabh Gupta, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mumbai. It can be recalled that Majid Memon was the defence lawyer of Mumbai bomb blast accused who were recently acquitted by the court. Noted filmmaker Mahesh also said that the assault on Majid Memon was aimed at restraining the lawyer from fighting for social justice. "It's a clear indication towards a person, who has been fighting for social justice that he should restrain from doing so," said Mahesh Bhatt.

MP flash flood kills 34, 22 swept away (Go To Top)

     Bhopal: Flash floods in Madhya Pradesh killed at least 34 people, besides sweeping 22 others, across eight districts, following incessant rains. Officials said that a bus carrying a marriage party was also swept away in the rising waters of a nullah in Rehali tehsil of Sagar district killing 15 passengers, Else where five persons, including a teenager and two women, drowned after their jeep got swept away in the gushing waters of Ledraha River near Sagar. While four people died due to a wall collapse in Jabalpur, one person drowned and another got electrocuted upon coming in contact with live wire. One boy was also reported swept away in the rising waters of a nullah near Behrol. Five deaths were also reported in Satna with one each in Katni and Umaria districts, taking the total death toll to 34. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Babulal Gaur, however, confirmed 11 deaths in flood-related incidents. He said that contact with as many as 1,000 people in five-six villages was cut off in Sagar districts, adding that 4000 people were being offered shelter in relief camps in Rewa, Panna, Satna and Damoh. He said that the state government has also sought help from the Centre and asked for Army choppers and boats to help in the rescue efforts. "We have sought two army helicopters and boats from the Centre. Efforts are on to use trains to transport the available boats to affected areas. Relief operations are being carried out on a war- footing," he said, adding that district collectors have been kept at high alert.

BJP leader Jaitley hospitalised (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley was rushed to a hospital in New Delhi on Monday after he was diagnosed with high blood pressure. Informed party sources said that Jaitley,a general secretary of the party and former minister in the government of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, had been admitted to the Escorts Heart Institute in South Delhi. Quoting family sources, the party sources that Jaitely was on his regular morning walk when he experienced some uneasiness and was rushed to the hospital. Doctors attending to him at the hospital described his condition as stable, and confirmed that he could be discharged by the end of the day.
