India House celebrations cancelled

London: The proposed celebrations of 75 years of glorious history of the Indian High Commission in the United Kingdom, India House, for July 8, scheduled to be attended by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, have been cancelled in the wake of Thursday's blasts in London's underground network killing two people and injuring hundreds. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, on his way back from the G-8 summit at Gleneagles, was scheduled to drop in and unveil the commemorative stone marking 75 years of India House. A number of British politicians and NRIs were expected to grace the occasion. The House had been given a refreshing look with the walls and the stones decorated in an artistic way Spread over five floors with the offices of the High Commissioner and of the consular departments, there's not much on the outside - except for the tricolour and the name of the building in both English and Devanagri - to mark out its strategic importance. But every bit within is steeped in history. It was Sir Atul Chatterjee, a Cambridge student and later a High Commissioner in 1925, who first dreamt of moving the High Commission office from its rented address at Grosvenor Gardens to its own buildings. When Governor General Lord Irwin finally gave his nod to Chatterjee's proposal, a 12,400 square feet plot was granted by the County Council on a 999-year lease. Work on the building finally began in 1927 with Sir Herbert Baker, who designed the Parliament House and the Secretariat building in New Delhi, as the chief architect. On July 8, 1930, George V and Queen Mary inaugurated the building. The king was gifted a solid gold key for the rosewood door of the House which was fittingly described by the Times as the "one of the most attractive buildings in modern London". The murals decorating the central dome, the entrance and the main hall were constructed by the quartet of four Bengali artists - Lalit Mohan Sen, Ranada Charan Ukil, Dhirendra Krishna Deb Barma and Sudhansu Sekhar Choudhury - who worked on a pay of one-pound- a-day. The murals depict scenes from the Indian history.
