Landslides create havoc in Himachal Pradesh

Kullu: While heavy rains continue to lash country's northern plains, heavy landslides have created havoc in Himachal Pradesh, bringing life to a standstill. Three days of continuous rainfall in the region have triggered landslides blocking roads and washing away houses in the area. "A lot of damage has been done. So many shops have been washed away by the rains. People cannot stay in their houses," said Sanjay. Various houses have been washed away and several more damaged along with many bridges with all the rivers in the valley flowing above the danger mark. Meanwhile, in capital New Delhi, Union Home Secretary V.K. Duggal said though the flood fury has subsided in some areas, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh continued to cause concern. "At the moment there are only couple of districts in Madhya Pradesh and some areas in Himachal Pradesh which are affected and some parts in the lower reaches of Jammu and Kashmir. But, the areas of concern are Panna and Kinnaur districts which are still facing problems," he said.

Nine MLAs attend Rane's meeting (Go To Top)

Mumbai: Only nine Shiv Sena MLAs today attended the Legislature Party meeting called by the faction headed by expelled leader Narayan Rane at his official residence here. He had called the meeting claiming that he was still the leader of the opposition in Maharashtra Assembly. Rane had on Thursday warned that those who do not attend the meeting would loose their assembly membership. Besides Rane, the meeting is being attended by ''Chief Whip'' Vinayak Nimhan, Kalidas Kolambkar, Ganpat Kadam, Shankar Kambli, Manik Kokate, Shyam Sawant, Vijay Wadettiwar and Subash Bane. Shiv Sena on Wednesday had expelled Rane from the party and had elected Ramdas Kadam as its legislature party leader in the State Assembly. Rane then met the Speaker on Thursday saying his expulsion was illegal and termed the meeting convened by party executive Uddhav Thackeray as illegal. Assembly Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar, however, is still unclear about the official status of Rane as the Leader of the Opposition and Nimhan as the ''Chief Whip'' even as the Shiv Sena had paraded 52 MLAs led by newly elected legislative party leader Ramdas Kadam in front of Kupekar at Vidhan Bhavan They had also submitted a copy of the resolution passed by the party that included Rane's expulsion and appointment of Kadam as the new legislative party leader. The meeting got underway at B-3, the official residence of Rane near Mantralaya, the State Secretariat. Police made tight security arrangements at the venue, which was thronged by hundreds of Rane supporters. They were shouting that ''Hum se Jo takareyega, Mitti me mil jayege, (those who take on us will bite the dust) and Baccha baccha jaantha hai, Narayan Rane saccha hai (Children know that Rane is honest).''

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena working president Uddhav Thackeray, son of Bal Thackeray, accused Rane of trying to take over control of the party from its supremo Balasaheb Thackeray. "Rane thought that Balasaheb will not play active role in politics anymore and tried to capture power (the reigns of the party)," Uddhav said in an interview to 'Aaj Tak', according to a release issued by the channel. "I don't know what I have done to him. I am always available for people; he (Rane) is trying to confuse people. He thought Balasaheb is not keeping too well and this is the best opportunity to capture the reins of the party but could not succeed," said Uddhav about allegations against his style of functioning and inaccessibility to the workers. Congress and NCP, however, have launched a behind-the-scene campaign to woo Rane whose expulsion has created a crisis in the Shiv Sena and is expected to strenthen the ruling partners.

China to supply 4 frigates, 6 choppers to Pak Navy (Go To Top)

Lahore: Pakistan is to get four `F-22P' frigates and six medium-sized standardised `Z-9C' helicopters from China, the country's Navy Chief Admiral Shahid Karimullah has said. According to him, the first warship would reach Pakistan within three-and-a-half years, with the total consignment getting delivered by 2013. He added that his country was also mulling over purchasing submarines from China. He said that it was the first time that the two navies had reached such a high-level of collaboration. The supply of warships to Pakistan was part of a contract signed in April between China's State Ship-Building Corporation and Pakistan's Ministry of Defence Procurement during Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's Islamabad visit. The contract also involves technology transfer and Pakistan Navy personnel's training, including those of Karachi Shipyard, said the Daily Times. According to the paper, out of the four frigates, three will be built in China, while one will be built in Pakistan. The total cost of the project, to be borne by the Pakistani government, will be about 600 million dollars. It would be supported by a credit facility from China. Describing it as "a highly significant deal" between the two navies, Karimullah said that the two sides showed a strong political will to undertake the project, further strengthening the on-going defence cooperation.
