Oskar Schindler's factory to be immortalised as a museum

London: Oskar Schindler's tinware and enamel factory, 'Emalia' in Cracow, immortalised in Steven Speilberg's epic movie, is now all set to be transformed into a museum. A derelict ruin, the factory, where thousands of Jews worked and were eventually saved from the Holocaust, has, following, pressure from international groups and the small local Jewish community been agreed to be turned into a museum. Only two weeks back the place was teeming with rats and full of rubbish. The place had crumbling walls and Schindler survivors, many a time, were turned away as it was too dangerous for them to go inside, reports The Telegraph. Also many visitors to Emalia have expressed their amazement at Cracow's failure to honour Schindler, who spent his personal fortune trying to keep the workers alive with food bought on the black market, and died in poverty in 1974. City authorities, however, in their defence have said that they could buy the site only when its owner went bankrupt earlier this year. But the real fact, many believe was that Schindler was a ruthless industrialist who wanted to keep his underpaid workforce alive, besides the fact, that he was a German, something that has not gone well with the Polish populace, says the report.

As of now, the ministry of culture has allocated around 700,000 pounds for a renovation project and potential sponsors are also being lobbied for funds. Also parts of the building have been opened to casual visitors, though the museum is officially scheduled to open in December. The entrance to the factory, the blackened staircase as well as the room used by Speilberg as Schindler's office, completely furnished with Oskar's desk, a bentwood hat stand and a filing cabinet -are also open to public view. According to the paper, as part of the project, the completed "Oskar Schindler museum" will include files on all those who owe their lives to Schindler, in addition to a collection of Schindler saucepans donated by a local doctor. Also the rooms where Schindler's workers made saucepans and later munitions for the German army is to be transformed into a space for modern art. "This is one of the few places connected to the Holocaust which is not entirely negative, and associated with dead bodies. The visitor should get the feeling that they are entering history when they enter the factory," the paper quoted project manager, and local artist Aleksander Janicki as saying. Schindler Jews are excited at the project having taking place, as it will give a chance to preserve their story for Poland's Jewish community, as well as work as a befitting tribute to Oskar. "Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire," the paper quoted a Jewish saying on a plaque outside the wall. "I'll remember Mr Schindler till the day I die," said 81-year-old Jan Lieban, who was registered as number 376 on "Schindler's List" and later given permission to be taken to a new factory in Brunnlitz, then Czechoslovakia, in early 1945.
