SC strikes down Illegal Migrants Act

      New Delhi: The Supreme Court struck down the controversial Illegal Migrants (Determination through Tribunal) Act operating in Assam to identify Bangladeshi migrants on Tuesday. The apex court declared all tribunals functioning under the IMDT as unconstitutional and directed them to stop functioning with immediate effect. The court, allowing the petition filed by AGP leader Sarbanand Sonawal, said all pending matters before the IMDT Tribunal would stand transferred to tribunals under the Foreigners Act. Taking note of the huge influx of Bangladesh migrants into Assam, the Court directed the state government to constitute a sufficient number of tribunals under the Foreigners Act to deal with the situation effectively. The previous AGP Government had initiated the process for repeal of the IMDT Act, 1983 but Tarun Gogoi Government overturned the policy decision and supported its continuance. The previous NDA Government had also supported repeal of the ACT.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh meets President Kalam (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh today met President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. During their 30 minute talks , subjects like PM's recent visit to United Kingdom for the Group-8 summit, his forthcoming visit to U.S and the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament were discussed.

Gujarat flood loss Rs 8000 crore (Go To Top)

     Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Government has estimated the losses due to recent torrential rains and consequent floods in the state at over Rs 8,000 crore. A memorandum to this effect was presented by the state Government to the 13-member high-power Central team. An official spokesman said that the floods had directly or indirectly affected about 60 per cent of the state's geographical area and 40 per cent of its population. As per the last count, at least 202 people have died in flood and rain-related incidents. Gujarat, in its presentation, has put the losses to industries at Rs 3,000 crore, Rs 1,500 crore to the infrastructure (roads, bridges and buildings), Rs 1,200 crore to power, Rs 900 crore to dams, reservoirs and canal systems and Rs 800 crore to agriculture.

Central Task Force visits Ranthambore sanctuary (Go To Top)

     Ranthambore (Rajasthan): A Central Task Force probing the disappearance of tigers from the wildlife sanctuaries and parks in Rajasthan, held discussions on Tuesday with villagers and representatives of the hospitality industry and made observations for its report to be submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh later this month. The team, headed by Sunita Narayan, heard grievances of scores of villagers living in the periphery of the Ranthambhore National Park, hotelliers and a senior official of the state tourism department, official sources said. Five of the eight-member CTF team, which visited Hindala village and other huts in Ranthambhore, also discussed issues related to cattle grazing and rehabiliation of people if asked to leave their centuries old homes, according to the sources. The team was apprised on the cluster of hotels near Ranthambhore and tourists' pressure on the flora and fauna besides the VVIPs visits to the park. Besides Narayan, four members Valmiki Thapar, Madhav Gadgil, H S Panwar, Rajesh Gopal were also participated in the discussion with the villagers. On July 10,, the team had come to the Sariska sanctuary to make an on the spot probe of missing tigers in the forests since October, 2004.

RSS tells Fernandes not to interfere (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: The BJP today declined to comment on George Fernandes' statement, issued earlier in the day, regarding the ongoing RSS-BJP strife, while the RSS advised Fernandes not to intervene into its internal affairs. The BJP said that Fernandes is free to say anything as he enjoys a right to vent out his feelings in this democratic country. Meanwhile, RSS spokesman Ram Madhav said over telephone that the Sangh would advise the outsiders to refrain from making statements regarding its internal matter. Reacting to Fernandes' statement, Madhav said: "We welcome the statement.....but for the future we advise such outsiders to refrain from making statements concerning our internal matters."

IPS officer gets RI for cheating UPSC (Go To Top)

    New Delhi: An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer has been sentenced to 100 days of rigorous imprisonment, after nearly two decades of service, for committing fraud with the UPSC as he secured his appointment on the basis of a false Scheduled Caste certificate. "It stands established that the accused had cheated the UPSC and consequently the central government, misled and induced them to offer a job on the strength of a false certificate", Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Manoj Jain said while passing the order against Sanjay Bhatia, currently a Superintendent of Police in Haryana. Bhatia has been convicted under section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. He has also been fined for Rs one lakh or one month's extended imprisonment in case of default of payment. Bhatia originally belonged to the Bhati-Rajput community but cheated the UPSC and got into the service through the SC reservation quota in 1986.
