Kadam's election as Shiv Sena leader in Assembly upheld

Mumbai: Maharashtra State Assembly Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar on Tuesday upheld the election of Ramdas Kadam as leader of Shiv Sena Legislature Party, causing a political setback of sorts for expelled Shiv Sena leader Narayan Rane who resigned as the Leader of Opposition in the assembly. In an emotional speech in the Lower House, Rane hoped that no politician would experience the misfortune that had befallen on him. He lamented that saving the membership of the House was more important for the Shiv Sena MLAs than appreciating hardwork and loyalty. ''I am not after posts of power. I belong to that category of Shiv Sainiks who create posts,'' Rane said. Giving his ruling on the petition by Sena MLAs loyal to party executive president Uddhav Thackeray, Kupekar said he was also upholding other decisions taken at a meeting held on July 6.

London bombs most likely from military: expert (Go To Top)

London: French Intelligence officials have said that the bombs which ripped apart three Tube trains and a bus in London, last week, leaving more than 50 dead and hundred others injured, might have come from the military. Christophe Chaboud, the head of the French Anti-Terrorism Co- ordination Unit, said that the explosives used in the blast were of military origin, and most likely to have been sourced from the Balkans or from a military establishment by someone from the inside. "The explosives appear to be of military origin, which is very worrying," The Scotsman quoted Chaboud as saying. Chaboud is one of the five top officials sent by Paris to London following Thursday's terrorist attacks.

New UK entry clearance requirement (Go To Top)

London: Tony McNulty, Minister of State at the Home Office, today announced a new entry clearance requirement for people coming to the UK for more than six months. From November 13, 2005, all nationals from non EEA member states who wish to come to the UK for more than six months will need to obtain an entry clearance from a British diplomatic mission before travelling. A one-off cost of 85 pounds will enable the traveller, once entry clearance has been obtained, to stay for the full period without having to apply for a residence permit (unless they wish to change or extend their stay). The new entry clearance arrangements have been introduced in stages over a two year period. The first stage came into force on November 13, 2003 and involved ten nationalities. British Nationals (Overseas) and other categories of British nationals without the right of abode in the UK will continue to be able to travel without entry clearance and apply on arrival. As with the first phase, there will be a "grace period" which will operate until Janury 13, 2006 during which time any passenger arriving at a UK port who qualifies for entry but who does not have the necessary entry clearance will be admitted. The change to the Immigration Rules will be laid before Parliament this autumn.

Hyderabad gets first indoor cricket stadium - Cricket 365 (Go To Top)

Hyderabad: Be it heavy rains or scorching heat, cricket crazy people in the Hi-tech city can now carry on their practice all round the year in an indoor stadium. Aptly called as 'Cricket 365', the academy is open for 17 hours in a day and 12 months a year. The stadium has been brought up by Vidyuth Jaisimha, son of former test cricketer M.L. Jaisimha, who says that the stadium was a brainchild of his father. The academy hopes to cater to the needs of the deserving, besides providing entertainment value to corporate groups. "It's basically an indoor academy which will be available for cricketers to play from six in the morning to 11 in the night, uninterrupted. We will have coaches for young children," said Vidyuth Jaisimha. "The person who is very much interested in cricket can practice from morning till evening whereas outdoor you cannot have that kind of practice," said Sunil Banthia, a player. Spread on an area of 4000 square feet, the stadium boasts of a plush green artificial grass and other facilities like changing rooms and cafetaria for rest between practice sessions. Hyderabad also recently got a new cricket stadium, Visakha, renamed as Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium apart from the famous Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium. Visakha stadium has been constructed on the outskirts of the city and is hosting a number of domestic matches. The city has its cricketing history attached with the much famous Fateh Maidan, which is now known as the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium. This maidan hosted a Test match as far back as 1955-56 without ever becoming one of India's frontline venues. New Zealand were the opponents in all three Tests staged there - the last of which was a generation ago - and also had a part to play in one of the great World Cup matches, when David Houghton's magnificent 142 fell just short of lifting Zimbabwe to an epic victory in 1987.
