Delhi Police teams up with educational institutues

     New Delhi: In association with Education Departnment, Delhi police organised a self-defence training programme for women in the Capital recently. Enthusiastic women learnt self-defense skills from trained professionals and were in large number.During the training session, which was organised at New Police Line, physical instructors from different schools were trained on self-defence techniques by professional trainers. "Till date we have conducted 165 program on self defence training, but this is the biggest one. It covers every school and providing training to all physical education teachers. We train them how to defend themselves and how to stay fit. I hope it'll develop self confidence in them," said Bimla Mehra, Joint Commissioner of Police, Delhi. The women participants were taught not only physical defence techniques but also given psychological training to handle any difficult situation. "The techniques are not common but complicated, but we are trying our best to learn them," said a participant. "There are many cases of rape of young girls. In this programme, we have learnt how to defend ourselves. This is very important for women in today's world," said Rekha Katoj, Lecturer, Physical Education. "We are teachers, we can learn the techniques and teach them to our students. Because it will raise their self confidence," said one physical instructor. The training was imparted free of cost to the participants. During the training period, women participants were laso trained on how to use as simple tools as dupatta, mobile phone to defend themselves in any eventuality. The organisers believe that the skills acquired during the training will help prevent atrocities against the women, like the recent rape of a girl student in Dhaula Kuan area.

Salman Khan faces interrogation (Go To Top)

     Mumbai: The police have started the interrogation of Bollywood actor Salman Khan in context of the tapes of his alleged conversations with actress Aishwarya Rai, released by a private channel recently. His questioning comes after the taped conversation between Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai were aired by the television channel. The conversation which was recorded in 2001 was earlier published by a local newspaper on July 14th . The taped conversations heard Salman Khan threatening Aishwarya with his links in the underworld. Salman was questioned at the Andheri crime branch unit between 1 pm to 4 pm and police had taken his voice sample, Salman's lawyer Dipesh Mehta said. Mehta further said the actor was fully cooperating with the police. Terming the conversation as "false and fabricated," Mehta had earlier said : "this is an attempt by media to sensationalise the issue and the voice in the cassette is certainly not of Salman Khan." "It cannot be true because if the police had the cassette four years ago, they would have taken action against Salman then," he said. In the conversation, allegedly Khan threatened Rai to perform in an entertainment programme organised by a fugitive gangster, Abu Salem and warned her of the probable consequences of saying no to the underworld people.

Three 7/7 bombers visited Pakistan: Intelligence (Go To Top)

     Islamabad: Pakistani security officials have said that three of the London suicide bombers visited Pakistan. Officials said that while 30 year old Mohammad Sidique Khan, and 22 year old Shehzad Tanweer, came to Pakistan, together in November, 2004, 18-year old Hasib Hussain, the youngest of the Pakistani Britons came separately. The official however said that they were unable to trace the trio's movements while they were in Pakistan. "We are looking for their movements in Pakistan but so far we have not got anything concrete," The Nation quoted a security official as saying. Officials further said that they were also not sure whether the three had any link with terror group Al Qaeda number three Abu Farraj al-Libbi. "It is possible but we have no confirmation. According to the efforts we have made so far we know that both Khan and Shehzad did not go to any known seminary. But we are still checking," an official added. Libbi was earlier this year, nabbed by Pakistani forces in a Pakistan's remote North West Frontier Province.

Jagmohan Dalmia wins 'Achievement Award' (Go To Top)

      Kolkata: Former BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya has been honored with this year's "Achievement Award" instituted by the International Journal of the History of Sports (IJHS). Dalmiya received the award in Kolkata on Saturday for his "extraordinary performance" as cricket administrator over the past decade. He was chosen from among the 37 leading sports administrators from across the world. The award was given to mark the International Journal's 25th anniversary. I was conferred on the three most distinguished contributors who have helped change the face of the world through sport in the last 25 years. Besides being the BCCI chief, Dalmiya also the post of president of the International Cricket Council (ICC) from 1997 to 2000. IJHS executive Academic Editor J A Mangan, Dean of Social Sciences at the University of Chicago John Macaloon, and Vice Chancellor of Latrobe University Prof. Brian Stoddart were also present in the occasion. Besides, top cricket administrators from several countries, including BCCI President Ranbir Singh Mahendra, and Secretary S K Nair, Australia Cricket Chairman Bob Merriman, and Zimbabwe Cricket Union Chairman Petr Chingoka also graced the occasion.
