SC upholds KPS Gill's conviction in Rupan Deol Bajaj case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today upheld the conviction of former Punjab DGP and Indian Hockey Federation President K P S Gill in the 17 year old Rupan Deol Bajaj case. The former Punjab DGP had allegedly outraged the modesty of senior IAS officer Rupan Deol Bajaj at a dinner party on July 18, 1988. A Bench comprising Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice B N Srikrishna has dismissed Gill's appeal challenging a Punjab and Haryana High Court verdict holding him guilty of the charges levelled by Rupan. In 1998, a Chandigarh District and Sessions Court had said that Gill should be convicted for the offence. The Chandigarh court had also asked Gill to pay a fine of Rs 2 lakh to the officer, in addition to Rs 50,000 in legal expenses. He had been also prohibited from drinking in public places. On August 20, 1998, the Haryana High Court had upheld Gill's conviction under Sections 354 and 509 (for outraging the modesty of a woman), for his action against Deol. The High Court had asked Gill to execute a bond to maintain peace and good behaviour till January 5, 1999. It had also upheld the Sessions Court's order directing Gill to pay Rs 2 lakh as compensation to Bajaj. Gill had deposited the money in the High Court Registry, but Rupan had refused to take the money saying it should go to an organisation working for the upliftment of women. The Supreme Court today said that the Chief Justice of the High Court would take the decision for the disposal of the money to a women's organisation. The apex court has, however, rejected Rupan's plea for jailing Gill.

Haryana orders Gurgaon DC, SSP to go on 'leave' (Go To Top)
by Pankaj Yadav

New Delhi: The Haryana Government on Wednesday ordered Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner Sudhir Rajpal and Senior Superintendent of Police Yogendra Nehra to go on indefinite leave in the wake of the clashes that the police had had with the striking workers of the Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India (HMSI) over the past two days. The incident took place at the new mini-Civil Secretariat near the National Highway No. 8, where the workers had gone to submit a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Yadav. Announcing the decision at a press conference in Chandigarh, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said the move was taken to ensure an "impartial" inquiry into the incident. Nearly 200 workers of HMSI were injured in the incident, some of them seriously. About a hundred persons were arrested under different sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for disturbing the peace and causing injuries to police persons. Gurgaon Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagpravesh Dahiya suffered multiple fractures in both hands. The agitated workers had even set the car of Sub Divisonal Magistrate (SDM) Jai Singh Sangwan on fire. Following pressure from the Opposition parties, the Communists, and the wide media coverage of the incident, the state government had yesterday ordered an inquiry into the incident by a retired judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Earlier, on Monday, after meeting the victims at Gurgaon Civil Hospital, Hooda had ordered only a magistrate-level inquiry.

When Osama tried to annihilate Americans with poison pills (Go To Top)

New York: Nearly a year after 9/11, al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden had plotted to kill thousands of Americans by selling poisoned cocaine in the US. Had his plan succeeded, the number of casualties would have been more than in the 9/11 tragedy, said a report in the New York Post. According to the paper, Osama was willing to spend tens of millions of dollars to finance the deal, but his plot failed when the Colombian drug lords, whom he had approached, decided it would be bad for their business. Bin Laden hoped that large numbers of Americans dying from poisoned coke would lead to widespread terror, said a source adding, "they wanted to kill thousands or people - more than the World Trade Center." It further said that though the drug lords would have reaped millions of dollars as profits by selling cocaine to Osama, they knew that if the plan succeeded, it might effectively destroy the market for their coke in America for years. The other reason the drug lords didn't agree to the deal, was their fear of retaliation from the US government once its citizens started to die from the drugs, the paper added. According to the paper, FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) sleuths had the information that Osama had personally met with leaders of a Colombian drug cartel in 2002 to negotiate the purchase of tons of cocaine, but didn't make it public. However, the place where Osama met the drug lords could not be known.
