And there were so many things that I was able to reveal to him that I probably wouldn't reveal to many people," she was quoted as saying. "I've had things that have affected me on a really, really deep level that are not written about and that I never speak about. They are my own private burdens. Landlines face a threat from web calling (Go To Top)

London: Traditional fixed phone lines may soon be extinct thanks to the fast growth of web-based telephone services being used by millions of people for ringing friends, family and business contacts abroad free over the internet. According to The Telegraph, the best known of the new services, Skype, was launched in April 2003 and the free software has been downloaded to 130 million being used by 47 million people. To make a phone call using the Skype system, customers need a computer and a fast broadband internet connection, plus a microphone and speakers or a headset. The basic Skype software package converts a home computer into a telephone. Once the software has been installed, it is possible to speak to anyone in the world who also has Skype for free as long as their computer is switched on. The benefits of Skype are greatest for people and companies who regularly make international calls. The services use "voice over internet protocol" (Voip) technology that hops up speech into small packets of digital information and sends them over the internet just like e-mails. The disadvantage with Skype, and similar services offered by internet service providers such as Wanadoo, is that calls have to be made from the computer and can only be received if the machine is left switched on.
