IAF's Everest conqueror missing in blizzard

New Delhi: After the joy and glory comes sorrow and sadness, something very much associated with a soldier's life. And so is the case with the Indian Air Force mountaineering team that conquered Everest two days back on May 30. The IAF mountaineering team, which conquered Mt. Everest is looking for one of its men, reported missing in a blizzard, said a report issued by the Ministry of Defence. The release said that after successfully summitting Mt. Everest on May 30, the IAF team started its descent back for the Advance Base Camp. Squadron Leader SS Chaithanya and one sherpa who were the last to scale the peak were trailing the team by almost two hours during descent. It was at that time that a severe blizzard struck the team. Though Wing Commander RC Tripathi and Sergeant NR Choudhary with their sherpas reached camp three at around 7: 00 pm, the sherpa accompanying Squadron Leader Chaithanya reached the camp only at around 8:15 pm and informed the team that he had lost radio contact with Chaithanya. The weather conditions did not permit any night search for the Squadron Leader and the lookout for him started only in the morning. Squadron Leader Chaithanya is still reported missing and has not been located. Efforts to find him are still going on. Squadron Leader Chaitanya, along with Wing Commander RC Tripathi, and Sergeant NR Choudhary had on May 30 conquered the summit between 05:15 am and 06:30 in the morning. Squadron Leader Chaithanya is posted in the Western Air Command.

Shabir Shah gets a 'Kashmiri' passport (Go To Top)
by N. Bhadran Nair

Srinagar: Even as India and Pakistan are battling over the issue of Kashmir since independence, a fresh controversy has been kicked off by the Regional Pasport Office (RPO) in Srinagar, which has endorsed the nationality of Democratic Freeom Party Chairman Shabir Shah as "Kashmiri." While the nationality of all other leaders have been shown as "Indian", only Shah's nationality has been shown as "Kashmiri" Shah said that since the territory is disputed, he had written in his nationality in the passport application as Kashmiri, which has been "upholded" by the RPO. "Why should I have any problem, if the Government of India accepts my nationality as 'Kashmiri'?" he asked. Shah is amongst the 11 Kashmiri leaders who have been issued passports by the Srinagar RPO and are slated to board the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus tomorrow. The travel documents of all these 11 leaders - seven from All Parties Hurriyat Conference headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and two each from Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front headed by Yaseen Malik and Democratic Freedom Party led by Shabir Shah - have been cleared for travel by the bus by both sides. All these leaders have stated that they will travel on their own transport till Slamabad on the Indian side alongwith their supporters, before boarding the bus at Slamabad, six kms before the Command Bridge. Meanwhile, New Delhi has made it clear that if Pakistan invites the Hurriyat leaders to visit Islamabad or any other place, the "onus lies with Pakistan authorities." Referring to reports that Pakistan has asked Hurriyat leaders boarding the June 2 Srinagar-Muzaffarbad bus to carry their passport also, External Affairs Ministry spokesman said the understanding between New Delhi and Islamabad was very clear that anyone travelling by the bus should visit only the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. "The bilateral understanding is limited to travel only to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. If they are invited to Islamabad the onus lies with Pakistan authorities," said Navtej Sarna, MEA spokesman.

Gaur firms up his position, inducts six new Ministers (Go To Top)

Bhopal: Tightening his control over the Council of Ministers, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Babulal Gaur today carried out a reshuffle, inducting six new faces while dropping three. The politics of reshuffling indicates that any dissident in the Council of Ministers would not be able to frustrate Gaur's policies. However, it is being said that Uma Bharti has not influenced the process and Gaur has the backing of party High Command. Two of the newly sworn-in Ministers are of Cabinet rank and four are Ministers of State. Governor Balram Jakhar administered the oath of office at Raj Bhavan this morning.

Lalu not to join hands with Paswan in Bihar elections (Go To Top)

Patna: Union Railway Minister and RJD President Lalu Prasad Yadav has said that his party will not join hands with Ram Vilas Paswan in the upcoming Assembly elections in Bihar. "There is no possibility of an electoral agreement between the LJP and RJD in coming Asssembly poll," he said. Yadav said that with Paswan's MLAs deserting him, LJP was reduced to a party without rank and has become "defunct". Paswan had earlier said that his party was ready to support the UPA alliance along with RJD for the formation of Government in Bihar, if the alliance showed its preparedness to give the State a Muslim Chief Minister. Referring to Paswan's suggestion, Yadav said that the proposal came at the eleventh hour, when the State Assembly was dissolved. Yadav also gave indications that he wanted to bring UPA Government in Bihar, saying that he was ready to give more seats to Congress, CPI and CPI-M in the coming elections. Paswan, on the other hand, has said that he would maintain his resolute of formation of non-RJD and non-BJP government in Bihar. He, however, said that his party was prepared to form an alliance with Congress, CPI-ML (Liberation), CPI and CPI-M if their leaders came forward to his proposal. Meanwhile, CPI has started making efforts towards the formation a "third front", consisting of left parties and other parties, which would fight against RJD and the NDA. The party has asserted that it would not go with RJD in the coming polls.
