Former Nepalese PM GP Koirala arrives in India (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Former Nepalese Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala today arrived in New Delhi. Although Koirala lauded India's moral support for his efforts in restoring democracy, he said countries supplying arms to King should be cautious to see how the arms are being put to use. "We are thankful to India for the moral support extended to us in our efforts towards restoring democracy. We are also appreciative and thankful to the international community for having provided us with moral support," said Koirala. Though Koirala, who is currently heading a several-parties alliance against King Gyanendra , is visiting New Delhi primarily for a medical check up, he is likely to meet with various political leaders. Koirala said the world community should ensure that any arms supply to the King's government should not be diverted to suppress public opinion. "Whosoever is supplying arms, be it India, Britain or America, should realise that what is being done with these arms. One should realise whether these arms are being used against the Maoists, or are they being used to aid the dictatorship, or else it is being used to suppress the public." said the former Prime Minsiter. Nepal had requested India to resume supply of arms and ammunition to its army after the emergency was lifted in the Himalyan kingdom. The King's decision to take power plunged Nepal into political turmoil as he jailed politicians and suspended civil liberties, saying he was acting to control the raging anti-monarchy Maoist insurgency which has killed 12,000 people since 1996. Strict media censorship was imposed in the aftermath of the takeover, some of which has since been relaxed. In the latest crackdown, a private radio station in Kathmandu said it had been ordered to close.

Sangh Parivar criticises Advani for pro-Jinnah remarks (Go To Top)

Bangalore/ Bhopal/ Karachi: Sangh Parivar leaders have criticised BJP President Lal Krishna Advani for praising Jinnah and calling him a secular leader. "We all know that Jinnah's role was most significant in the partition of the country on the basis of religion. We do not agree with Advani. If Jinnah is called secular then history will have to be rewritten again," RSS spokesman Ram Madhav said Attacking the BJP President, VHP leader Acharya Giriraj Kishore said that he was trying to make inroads into muslim vote base and making efforts to project himself as a secular leader. "He is making a joke of Hindu community by saying that the person, who was responsible for division of the country and direct action against Hindus, is secular. It's like stabbing the Hindus in their back. His statements are very wrong," said Kishore. VHP activists today protested against Advani's remarks and demanded his resignation as Member of Parliament from Gandhinagar. Advani, on a week long visit to Pakistan, today paid homage to the father of Pakistan at Karachi and wrote his comments in visitors' book. "As I remarked in my observations that I noted down, that many persons find place in history but there are very few who actually make history, and Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah was one such rare personality who had a determined objective, and he achieved this objective by becoming the architect of a new state," Advani told reporters. "And therefore, when I came here, I felt that I am doing a duty by paying homage to this great outstanding leader", he added. The VHP also lamabsted Advani for describing Babri Masjid demolition as his "saddest day".

According to the paper, she made the threat call to avoid deportation of her boyfriend's sister Pakistan, who was aboard the flight. An FBI agent reportedly alleged in an arrest warrant that Faisal told an emergency dispatcher on Feb 13 that there were two bombs aboard flight `PK 718' on its way to Lahore. Supplies to Pakistani camps in Bangladesh cut (Go To Top)

Dhaka: More than 250,000 people have been languishing in an inhuman condition in Pakistanis' refugee camps as the authorities on Friday cut off civic amenities like water and power connection to their camps in Dhaka and elsewhere. Following the disconnection of water and power supply, several thousands stranded refugees demonstrated on the city streets and marched towards the Prime Minister's Office demanding restoration of their civic amenities. The power cut came at a time when the entire Bangladesh is suffering from a severe sultry weather that has killed as many as 27 people across the country in last two weeks. Women, children and aged people are the worst-hit by the scorching heat leading to pathetic situation in the slum-like camps, where the stranded Pakistanis are staying for more than 33 years. "We are trying to resolve the problem immediately on human ground," Khandaker Mahbub Uddin Ahmed, a ruling party lawmaker from Mohammadpur in the capital where the largest Pakistanis' camp located, told Asian News International after a meeting with Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in this regard. He said the Power Development Division had snapped the electric line because of huge outstanding bills. The Prime Minister urged the stranded people to pay the outstanding bills to help the government to continue her support for them, Mahbub said. In the morning, several thousands stranded Pakistanis, under the banner of Stranded Pakistanis and General Repatriation Committee, started marching towards the Prime Minister's Office. But, police obstructed them on their way. A five-member delegation headed by the SPGRC leader Nasim Khan submitted a memorandum to the prime minister at her office. The Prime Minister's office assured them that steps will be taken to restore power at the camps within next 24 hours. lthough the Bangladesh government has been pressing Pakistan for taking back their people who got stranded during the 1971 Bangladesh War of Liberation, the successive Pakistani governments ignore the issue very technically. Last year, during the Pakistan Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz's visit, Bangladeshi leaders urged him to find a way out for repatriation of the stranded Pakistanis. But, Pakistan seems to be unkind to its people.
