"L K Advani's statement on Jinnah, which he gave in Pakistan that Jinnah was right, we do not agree with it. Advani's resignation not to have any impact on NDA: Fernandes (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Former Defence Minister and NDA Convenor George Fernandes has said that BJP President L K Advani's resignation would do no harm to the alliance as he was still the leader of the Opposition and a major pillar of the party. "I don't see any harm being done to NDA due to Advaniji's resignation. He is still the main leader of the BJP. Party presidents keep changing, that does not make any impact on an alliance," Fernandes said. He, however, personally felt sad over Advani's resignation and said that that Advani was an emotional person and was hurt due to wrong criticism of his right statement. " I am very sad and upset over Advaniji's resignation. Because what Lalji spoke was completely true. He didn't say one wrong word. Advaniji is an emotional person and was very upset with the unwanted criticism of him in the country," added he. Fernandes also said that Jinnah indeed was a secular and blamed the Congress for pushing Jinnah on the path of communalism. "Jinnah was a secular person till Congress pushed him out. Congress made him a communal person and a theocrate. They cheated him over the 1935 provincial elections and that is why he joined the Muslim League as he felt answerable to Muslims," added Fernandes. "Gandhi was killed before he finished his task of building a secular India in true sense. Like that Jinnah died before finishing his task of building a secular Pakistan. After his death, extremist forces took control of the country and pushed it on the communal path," said the former Defence Minister.

Haryana police raid Pataudi's house, seize his cars (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Haryana state police on Tuesday raided the New Delhi residence of former Indian cricket captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi and seized the cars that he had reportedly used for hunting endangered black buck deer in the state's Jhajjar District over the weekend. Police had earlier impounded the vehicle in which Pataudi was travelling. The vehicles contained the carcasses of the animals, which included the black buck, two rabbits, a rifle, a gun and a few cartridges. The controversy erupted after a dead black buck deer was found in Pataudi's blue semi-utility vehicle at the weekend. "We had come here to collect the cars, which we have done. The investigation is continuing," said Ajmer Singh, sub-inspector of police. Patuadi hails from a royal family and accusations have been made on the Haryana state government that an attempt was being made to shield the former cricketer who faces arrest charges. A petition has been filed against eight people and the state police have nabbed one person after registering the case. Among India's top skippers, Pataudi played 46 tests between 1961 and 1975. He was captain in all but six of the Tests that he represented India in. His wife, Sharmila Tagore, is a former Bollywood star and son Saif Ali Khan a leading actor. Black bucks are endangered and hunting them is illegal, punishable by up to three years in jail or a fine of 25,000 rupees. The latest incident, coming amidst a nationwide furore over rampant poaching of tigers, only highlights that the high and the mighty still pay a damn to wildlife laws. Film star Salman Khan and his actor friends are facing trial of black buck hunting in 1998.

Lalu dolls, a major hit with toy shops and public in Bihar (Go To Top)

Patna: India's much-lampooned Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav is now a huge hit with the children who are forcing parents to buy chubby, mop-haired dolls of the rustic leader. Several shops across Bihar have reportedly been flooded with requests for this popular doll. Dubbed by a foreign journalists as the "clown prince" of India, the tiny Lalu dolls went for sale last week and despite the steep price of Rs.144 for the smallest version, they are selling like hot cakes. Harassed parents in state capital Patna say toddlers are crazy about posessing the Lalu replica. Lalu is a household name in Bihar and perhaps Indian politics' most popular face. While Indian politicians often have temples dedicated to them, Yadav is believed to be the only leader to have a doll modelled on him. "Day by day the sale for this doll is increasing. People at home, as soon as they hear that a doll of Laluji (Lalu Prasad Yadav) is on sale they want to buy, they want to buy it as fast as possible in case we run out stock," Pradeep Jain, a shopkeeper, said. "Children near my home have brought this doll so they have also been raising a hue and cry for it. The children were after my life for this doll and that is why I am here. My children love it," added Ganaur Shah, a parent.

The 57-year-old leader famous for his often-bizarre histrionics is blamed for most ills plaguing Bihar, but still but managed to rule the state for 15 years before his ouster in February this year. The shocking loss notwithstanding, analysts say that Lalu is most likely to regain power Buoyed by this assessment, the Railway Minister has already hit the campaign trail for the elections, expected to be held in October. As usual and in his characteristic upbeat style, Lalu said that the dolls reflected the people's love for him. "The great people of our country and our future, the little children and the boys and girls have seen me and now they want to take me home. The children will play with me, some of them will even maul and hit me," Lalu told reporters on the sidelines of a party function. His Rashtriya Janata Party (RJD), the second largest in the federal ruling coalition, is expected to buy in bulk the unique dolls for promotion during road shows and rallies. The elections will be a test for the RJD, which draws its support from the millions of poor and lower caste members of the Hindu hierarchy.
