Nepalese ex-PM Koirala meets Sonia Gandhi

New Delhi: Former Nepalese Prime Minister and senior Nepali Congress leader Girija Prasad Koirala today met Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and discussed wide range of issues. The meeting lasted for 30 minutes at Sonia's residence -10, Janpath. External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh was also present during the meeting. Koirala's visit is expected to serve as a rallying point for political leaders in both countries pushing for the restoration of democracy in the Himalayan kingdom. Koirala, the 82-year old grand old man of Nepal politics, was arrested soon after the imposition of emergency. He was released a few days after King Gyanendra, under tremendous pressure from India and the international community, lifted the emergency on the eve of expiry of three months after the royal proclamation. New Delhi hailed the release of the veteran Nepalese leader and urged the king to remove all curbs on civil liberties and fundamental rights and to lift media censorship and restrictions on movement. Koirala has come to India for medical check-up.

Sonia Gandhi to revive Gandhi family ties with Russia (Go To Top)

New Delhi: The UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has chosen old ally Russia for her first official foreign tour after the Congress returned to power last May. Sonia Gandhi is to leave for Moscow on June 13 on a four-day trip. Since the Congress came to power in May last year, this will be the third high-profile visit by an Indian leader to Russia. President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has just returned from a four-nation visit that took him to Russia, where he held extensive interactions with the political leadership and heads of various defence production establishments. Before Kalam's visit, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was in Moscow in May to join world leaders for Russia's celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. Gandhi's decision to visit Russia ahead of Pakistan and China - both countries have invited her - is being seen as a confirmation of the Government's eagerness to strengthen ties with its "time- tested strategic partner". According to sources, "India and Russia enjoy a special relationship for decades, and the Nehru-Gandhi family has traditionally maintained cordial bonds with Moscow."

This will be Sonia Gandhi's second foreign visit since the Congress came to power at the Centre. Earlier, she had gone to Bangkok to attend a conference on HIV/AIDS for a couple of days. Sonia will be visiting Russia on the invitation by Russian President Mr Vladimir Putin who had met her during his India trip last year. While the visit itself is seen as a strong signal to the Russian leadership about Indias commitment to strengthen ties, Sonia may avail the opportunity of her meeting with Putin and other leaders to pave the way for greater co-operation in various areas. The diplomatic significance of Sonia's visit can hardly be missed. Earlier, describing Russia as India's "time-tested" friend, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had highlighted the need for further advancing strategic bilateral ties during a meeting with President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin. "Russia is our time-tested friend and the people of all walks of life in India see Russia as our friend and recognise the strategic importance of ties with it," Singh had said. The UPA Government seems to be correcting the impression created by the previous NDA Government that India gave more importance to the US. Russia has been an all-time favourite of the Congress and Sonia's visit is a strong signal in this direction.
