Advani withdraws resignation

New Delhi: BJP president LK Advani finally took back his resignation as the party president this evening. A formal announcement in this regard was made by senior leader Sushma Swaraj at the end of party's Parliamentary Board meeting. "During the last four days there was a crisis gripping the party after Advani's resignation, which was unequivocally rejected. It is now over," Swaraj said. All the top party leaders including former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and former Union Minister Murli Manohar Joshi attended the meeting in which a new resolution was adopted. The party in the new resolution cleared its position on Mohammed Ali Jinnah. The new resolution described Jinnah as a leader who pursued the two-nation theory which ultimately resulted in the country's partition. It, however, termed Advani's Pakistan visit as successful. The resolution had the approval of the whole Sangh Parivar including RSS.

Meanwhile, the RSS today said that it was the internal matter of the BJP but if somebody has to go with the Sangh then he/she will have to believe in its ideology. But the VHP said that the BJP has leadership crisis. VHP leader Giriraj Kishore said that the turnaround showed lack of determination by the senior BJP leader. "The man who had himself given resignation is now going back on his words and preparing to take back his resignation under the pressure of his party members. The society needs strong and determined people," he said in New Delhi. The CPI (M) said that the whole episode showed that the BJP was only a "political arm" of its Hindu ideologue. "It has once again been established that the BJP is only the political arm of the RSS. And it is the RSS which is deciding what should be BJP's future. Sudershan's earlier comments that the older BJP leadership should give way to the younger generation was the signal and the change was imminent. Now the change has come in this manner," Sitaram Yechuri, leader of Communist party of India (Marxist) told reporters in Trivandrum.

Protest in Mumbai against alleged desecration of Quran (Go To Top)

Mumbai: Scores of Muslims poured out on the streets of Mumbai today in continued anti-US protests against the alleged desecration of holy Koran by US soldiers at Guantanamo Bay. Chanting anti-American and anti-US President George W. Bush slogans, the crowd marched through the streets, mainly in residential areas, carrying placards condemning the act. The protest was organised jointly by the All India Sunni Jammiatul Ulema (AISJU) and Raza academy of India. Protesters spit on the posters of Bush and some also beat it with slippers. Later on the activists burnt the US President's effigy to register their protest. Newsweek, which had published the story that triggered days of rioting in Afghanistan and other countries in which at least 16 people were killed, retracted the report on May 16. The White House has challenged the accuracy of Newsweek's May 9 report that was based on an anonymous source and said it had damaged the U.S. image overseas. The commander of Guantanamo Bay told a Pentagon briefing last week that five incidents of "mishandling of a Koran" by US personnel have been identified at the prison, but found no credible evidence that the Muslim holy book had been flushed down a toilet. The Pentagon said it holds about 520 foreigners at Guantanamo, many there for nearly 3-1/2 years. Most were caught in the Afghanistan war. Human Rights Watch said the dispute over Newsweek's report overshadowed the fact that religious humiliation of detainees at Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere has been widespread.

Four killed, 50 injured in violence at Dadri railway station (Go To Top)

Dadri (UP): At least four people, including two policemen were killed and 50 others injured in violence that broke out at the railway terminal here today. A scuffle broke out in Dadri station, 30 kms from New Delhi, after the death of a passenger sparked public outrage against railway officials. Police said the incident happened after the railway authorities conducted a surprise raid to check ticketless travellers. Local reports said some of the agitated passengers then attacked the police officials, which led to the burning down of the entire station. Santosh Yadav, the District Magistrate of Gautambudh Nagar said all vital equipment were safe though the violence caused a lot of damage to the station. "I have come here mainly to assess the amount of damage, and restart the trains. There has been a lot of damage here, the station, station equipment, tickets etc. It will take some time, but luckily vital all equipment are safe. But there has been a lot of damage," he said. Eyewitnesses said locals were still agitated about the attitude of police officials. "People are still agitated, they say they want justice. We have told them (authorities) this," Rajkumar Bhatti, a local leader said. The injured have been admitted to hospitals in Ghaziabad and an enquiry has been ordered into the incident.

Rane inducts 7 cabinet ministers, ignores NCP claim (Go To Top)

Panaji/Surat: Goa chief minister Pratapsinh Rane on Friday inducted seven Cabinet ministers into his recently formed government, but opted to exclude key Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Fancisco Pacheco. Digambar Kamat, Atnasio "Babush" Monseratte, Pandurang Madkaikar, Subhash Shirodkar, Louizinho Faleiro, Joaquim Alemao and Dayanand Narvekar were the persons inducted into the Rane ministry. They were administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor S C Jamir at Raj Bhavan in Panaji this morning. Of the new ministers, Kamat, Monserratte and Madkaikar had recently won the Margao, Talegaon and Cumbharjua Assembly seats on Congress tickets. Earlier, an angry NCP chief Sharad Pawar accused the Congress-led coalition government in Goa of not observing the "coalition dharma" by ignoring the claims of Pacheco, but added that his party would continue its support to the present state government. "This is injustice. It is the responsibility of the (Pratapsinh) Rane government to induct our MLA and Congress is going against its promise by inducting only its MLAs in the cabinet expansion", Pawar told reporters before the beginning of the second day proceedings of party's national convention in Surat. "Although we are not happy at what is going on, we will not take any action which would benefit BJP," Pawar said. There is bound to be disagreement in coalition politics but one has to look at the larger interests", he said. Earlier on Friday, Pawar discussed the Goa situation with NCP leader in Goa, Dr Wilfred DeSouza, Union minister Praful Patel and party general secretary Tariq Anwar. On Thursday night, Pawar had threatened to withdraw support to the Rane government if the commitment of including NCP MLA (Mikky Pacheco) was not honoured.
