Suicide bomber sisters meant to fuel sectarian violence in Pak

Islamabad: Pakistani officials have said that the arrest of the two sisters who had allegedly been trained as suicide bombers, has removed a major threat of Pakistan getting engulfed in a fresh spate of sectarian violence. Police officials said the two sisters were well-educated daughters of a wealthy bank executive, who had each married a top member of the Laskar-e-Jhangvi group and received training as suicide bombers. "It removes a major threat because such an unusual attack using female suicide bombers would have caused a lot of damage. It would have set an example for others to follow," The News quoted a senior police official, involved in the fight against sectarian violence, as saying. While the women's mother insists that her daughters were innocent and educated, police however claims that the two were brainwashed by their uncle Gul Hasan, who was involved in two suicide attacks on Imambargahs in Karachi in 2004, which killed 45 people. Hasan was, last week sentenced to death.

Faridabad: Former Indian cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and his six accomplices, charged with killing a black buck, have sought more time from Haryana police to make themselves available before it, even as police continued their search to arrest them. Pataudi and six others, in a communication to Jhajjar police, have sought time till June 15 to present themselves before it, police sources said. The accused, charged under the Wildlife Protection Act, sought more time saying the police notice had been served at their residence in their absence, the sources said. Meanwhile, the Jhajjar Superintendent of Police (SP) Hanief Qureshi refused to comment on the same, but said efforts were being made to arrest the accused. Raids at different places in Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh would continue to apprehend Pataudi and others, he said, adding they were expected to move an Environment Court in Faridabad. However, court sources said the judge hearing cases related to environment was on leave till Monday. Pataudi and others were charged with violating the Wildlife Protection Act for allegedly killing a endangered black buck and two rabbits in the forests of Jhajjar.

Shoban Mehta had links with cricketers: Police (Go To Top)

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat police have claimed to have found various evidences during their investigation which prove that Mumbai-based bookie Shoban Mehta had links with Indian and foreign cricketers players. A senior police officer today said that Mehta had links with Indian cricketers Mohammad Azahruddin, Nayan Mongia and foreign cricketers, like Australian Mark Waugh and South African late Hansie Cronje. "The interrogation of Mehta, who was brought from Mumbai on a transfer warrant with regard to a cricket betting case, has thrown up certain interesting facts," said D. G. Vanjara, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch). Vanjara told that Mehta's cricket betting network was not only spread in India but across Pakistan, England and Australia also. "He not only ran a cricket betting racket in the entire country, but also had links with Australian bookie Mark Peter and England bookie code-named +Black 0365+," he said, adding, "Mehta used to bet on the probable result of a particular match like whether it will be a win or loss for one team or end in a draw". The Police also told that Mehta and bookies associated with him took "tips" about the factors affecting the match directly or indirectly from the players. "Tips about pitch condition, weather, toss, individual teams strategy, physical fitness of important players and several other matters were obtained by the bookies," said Vanjara.
