Increase in demand for idols of Lord Krishna abroad (Go To Top)

Kochi: A sudden increase has been recorded abroad in the demand for Lord Krishna idols manufactured in Kochi. The increase in demand has been mainly recorded from countries like Germany, Italy and France. The increase in demand for Lord Krishna idols has indeed given a boom to the industry of Kerala, which produces thousands of idols of Krishna and export it to various countries across the world. One of the major manufacturers of the idols - Sree Krishna Handicrafts - a government-owned establishment and handicraft- training centre in Cheethala, is happy with the rise in the demand. According to the company's chairman KS Soman, meeting the demand for these idols becomes hard for them during festival seasons. "Most of the Hindus in India and abroad maintain a separate room in their houses and place the Krishan idol there, as they believe that it will bring prosperity and wealth to their house and family members. Sometimes we are unable to meet the demand for idols also," said Soman. The idols are made in pure marble powder with paste using paper and tapioca. Later, it is put in a dye, then dried, finished and polished with emulsion paint. Finally, experts give the final touches to the idols. Initially, Sree Krishna Handicrafts was set to generate employment for women in the handicraft sector. There are around 50 women who are being trained and along with that they are provided with accommodation and food. Girija, who joined the company as a trainee, is now a teacher and feels proud to be attached with it. "Earlier, my father was against sending me for any work because of long distance traveling and other issues. It was because of my interest that I joined here. And, now when I got a permanent job here my father too is very happy," said Girija. Today, Sree Krishna Handicrafts has a vast network of dealers and agents who give the orders and export Krishna idols to other countries like Germany, Italy, France and many more.
