Kashmir solution possible within two weeks: Musharraf (Go To Top)

Kuala Lumpur: Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf on Monday said the solution to the decades old Kashmir issue could be possible within two weeks time, provided, there was a real political will to do it. "I think it can be resolved in two weeks actually, if there is a will and we sit down to discuss the options and reach an agreement. Well two weeks maybe, I just said that, yes, indeed I am very hopeful. The most important thing is to, for the leadership to have the will to reach a conclusion and I see that at this moment, the leadership does have, I think a desire and the will other than the people of both countries who have a desire to finally to resolve this dispute. Therefore I am optimistic that it will be resolved, in a certain time frame", General Musharraf said. The latest statement of Gen. Musharraf has added new hopes for ending the 58-year-old territorial problem, existing between the two neighbours, following peace initiatives by the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistan's President. But some optimists have even expressed hope for a final solution within two years. On being asked if he shared such an optimistic viewpoint, Gen.Musharraf said: "Why two years, I think it can be resolved within two weeks if we have the will." "I am just saying two weeks (as an example.) The most important thing is for the leadership to have the will to reach a conclusion," Musharraf told journalists in Kuala Lumpur during a refueling stopover on his way to Australia. "At this moment, the leadership has the will and I am very hopeful," he added. Musharraf said Pakistan and India were negotiating to withdraw troops from the Himalayan glacier of Siachen, the world's highest battlefield, where more soldiers have died from altitude, sub- zero temperatures and accidents than enemy action.
