UK charity worker accused of sexual abuse

     London: A British charity worker wanted for alleged sex offences against street children in India has entered the country despite London police being alerted by Interpol that he was being deported to Britain from Africa. According to The Daily Telegraph, Duncan Grant is wanted by authorities in India for his alleged paedophilic crimes. Based on the Indian charge, Interpol had issued a "red corner notice" for Grant, but this did not prevent the latter from entering Britain on June 1. His whereabouts, however, are unknown. Grant was deported to Britain from Tanzania, where he had fought extradition proceedings to India since his case was highlighted by the paper in August 2004. He does not face any charges in the UK.

Sonia visits Russia to revive Gandhi family's old ties (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: UPA chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi left for Russia this morning on a four-day visit. Accompanied by External Affairs Minister K. Natwar Singh, Gandhi will hold talks with the Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 15 in an attempt to revive Gandhi family's old ties with Russia. She will also attend a lunch hosted by the Russian President in her honour. Gandhi's agenda for talks with President Putin would not include issues which are the prerogative of the Prime Minister or the President of India. Sonia is visiting Russia on a personal invitation by Russian President Mr Vladimir Putin who had met her during his India trip last year. In Moscow, besides meeting with Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov, an old India hand, Gandhi is also scheduled to address a function on June 14, organised in her honour by the civic body Centre of National Glory of Russia.

Indian news channels back in Nepal  (Go To Top)

     Kathmandu: Indian news channels are back on air as Nepal Government has lifted the ban, which was imposed after the 1st February royal takeover. According to a report published in a local newspaper, the decision to resume telecast of Indian news channels was taken in the cabinet meeting that took place last Wednesday. "The government has lifted ban on these news channels from Sunday after more than four months, so we have now switched on these channels," an employee of Space Time Cable Network, a leading cable distributor, said. The move comes two days before the king goes to Doha on Monday to attend G- 77 summit. The Hindi news channels Aaj Tak, NDTV, Star News and Zee News, highly popular among the Nepalese, were disconnected from February 5 ever since it showed Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran saying in New Delhi the reasons India pulled out of the SAARC summit in Dhaka February 6-7. Shyam Saran was saying that the security situation in Dhaka after a grenade attack in which a former Bangladeshi minister was killed and the developments in Nepal were the reasons for India's pullout. Cable operators were barred from airing Indian news channels as part of the restrictions imposed on the media after King Gyanendra seized power and declared a state of emergency. However, the army official always continued to deny that they had given directives about discontinuing the broadcast of Indian news channels.

India-born Dr Death spotted living in style in US (Go To Top)

     Melbourne: India-born Dr Death, doctor Jayant Patel, who faces murder charges in Australia, resulting out of negligence and botched surgery attempts, has reportedly been spotted living in style in the US. Dr Death has been accused of causing as many as 87 deaths in Bundaberg Base Hospital Queensland, Australia. Queensland authorities have charged him with murder and trying for his extradition to Australia for trial. The Australian reported that Dr Death has been spotted along with his wife, living in a million-dollar home in the Portland, Oregon. The home, with a triple garage is worth 800,000 US dollars and located centrepiece of the upmarket street of NW Bluegrass Place, Portland. A resident of the upmarket neighbourhood west of Portland said, that she saw Dr Death showing his friends through a house, up for sale, a short distance away from his own home. "He just walked down the street, he just walked in ... he looked exactly the same as he looked on television. It was creepy," the paper quoted the woman as saying. The woman incidentally refused to reveal her name.

Mayor to open `Dilli Haat' fest in London (Go To Top)

     London: London Mayor Ken Livingstone will address the media this week at City Hall to mark the arrival of the two- day "Dilli Haat" festival of Asian crafts and culture in Trafalgar Square. Delhi's Minister of Tourism Arvinder Singh Lovely and Ramesh Negi, Chief Executive, Delhi Tourism and Transport Corporation (DTTC) will brief mediapersons about the festival, which is being organised by the Government of Delhi to promote Indian culture and the country as a visitor destination. Dilli Haat is a free event open to all and will take place on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 June. A Government of Delhi initiative, the festival will recreate the ambience of a rural craft market for visitors to Delhi, bringing together crafts, food and cultural performances from across India. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit will attend the event on June 18.
