21 new dead rivers unearthed on Mars

Washington: The orbiting cameras aboard the Mars Odyssey around the red planet Mars, have found new evidence that water existed on the planet some time in the past. The new data boasts of 21 new "dead rivers" with flows very similar to those found on the surface of Earth. "We were trying to determine how much water flowed through these valleys," Discovery Online quoted Dr. Rossman Irwin, a Mars researcher at the Smithsonian Institution, as saying. Earlier calculations about the water flow had been meaningless as the Mariner spacecraft imagery was not good enough to look into the canyons and the valleys. More recent data from the Mars Odyssey spacecraft has also provided vital clues about small tributaries. By studying these tributaries and the main channels of dry rivers, Dr. Irwin along with his colleagues was able to define the boundaries of ancient watersheds and also calculate the amount of water it would have taken to create the channels. However, it is also clearly understandable that whatever created the wet conditions on the planet, ended abruptly about 3.6 million years ago. This can be said, as the dry channels still exist on Mars; where on a wet planet like Earth these dry tributaries and channels would have been completely washed away. "What we are looking at is the evidence of the last flows on Mars. The climate on Mars deteriorated very, very quickly", June issue of Journal Geology quoted Irwin as saying. Even previous studies of the drainage feature on Mars reached similar conclusions. The Martian drainage systems apart from being rudimentary were not able to develop into drainage patterns found any where on the Earth. "It looks like the Martian [drainage] systems are immature," Dr. Mike Carr, a geologist of the Geological survey was quoted. "Nonetheless finding these [rivers] is comforting," Dr. Carr said. The new evidence, thus proved what has been stated in earlier studies that water once existed on the red planet Mars.

Mark Waugh denies links with Indian bookie Shoban Mehta (Go To Top)

Sydney: Former Australian Test cricketer Mark Waugh has denied that he ever knew Indian bookie Shoban Mehta, who has admitted of maintaining links with him during his playing days. During interrogation by the Gujarat police, Mehta revealed that Waugh used to supply him match-day information, which would subsequently help him in running his betting rackets. He also claimed that at times he used to contact the Australian cricketer an hour before the start of play to receive tips on weather and pitch conditions and the latest team changes. In 1995, Waugh was fined 10,000 dollars by the then Australian Cricket Board for supplying weather and pitch information to an Indian bookmaker identified only as "John". Through his agent Leo Karis, Waugh said that he was not concerned by the new allegations, and he had no case to answer in regard to Mehta's statements for all he knew, Mehta and "John" could be the same person. "Mark denies ever knowing this guy, or speaking with him or dealing with him. "I've no idea whether this guy could be John. That's not for us to determine. The thing is, Mark went through two corruption investigations and it was found he had no case to answer," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Karis as saying. Waugh'e agent further said that corruption investigations had not found Waugh guilty of anything other than supplying information to John. Besides Waugh, the Indian bookie has also named former South African captain (late) Hansie Cronje, and former Indian players Mohammad Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja and wicket-keeper Nayan Mongia for passing on pitch and weather-related information to him.
